How soon we forget that one.

It was 1993. Whitaker was the champ at 147. Chavez at 140. The P4P title was on the line. And for the deal to happen, Chavez's handlers demanded a CATCHWEIGHT of 145 for Sweet Pea. Pea happily obliged, knowing full well that despite his accomplishments up to that date:

    Lineal/WBC/WBA/IBF @ 135
    IBF @ 140
    Lineal/WBC @ 147

Whitaker still needed that crossover fight, the fight that would land him on the cover of Sports Illustrated, the fight that would make him undisputed P4P Champion of the World. And he found that the road went through the great Chavez.

And so, as Chavez held the better hand, even as the smaller man, he called the shots. The catchweight was his bargaining chip, and he cashed in.

NOBODY put him on blast for that. Chavez was the man. He had his way.

So what makes this different for Pacquiao?

There are just two kinds of posters who are bitchin abt this fight: Floyd gayboy fans and disgruntled mexicans.

Floyd "nutsucking" fans - they are trembling that smaller Manny might actually pull it off, showing what a fraud and gayboy their idol it. Meaning their "culda, shuda, wuda" bull**** will ring even more hollow and stupid. (Most posters know this already, but some are just born with a pin-sized brain anyway).

Bitter Mexicans - thru the years a lot of Mexicans have cooled off and became rational...they might not be a fan of Manny but respects the man. But their are simply some bitter cry-babies and emotional boylets here living on the past. Envoius that PAC has surpassed their teenage crushes ( MAB, EM, JMM) when they should be realizing by now that whatever Pac achieves is just a stamp of how great those guys were able to hang with him.

Of course there are some irrational *******s so it balances out. It's just that these critics are like chihuahas yapping and chasing their tails. Might be amusing at first, but gets annoying later. Of course they have dog-brains, so they don't realize that it's getting boring.

One is that Chavez could'nt make 147 lbs and be in shape........he is from the oldschool who did'nt take "SUPPLEMENTS" to build muscle mass......
God knows how fighters today go up 4, 5+ divisions and still look body natural in them?......that just didt'nt happen in the past.

In any regards, yes Chavez-Whitaker was fought at a catchweight, but Chavez was'nt asking a natural welterweight to come down to the catchweight, it was Pernell Whitaker who was a lightweight when Chavez was a juniorwelterweight.......Pernell could have easily come down all the way down to 140 lbs if he wanted too and not been effected physically.
The point is that Pernell was'nt at a disadvantage at the catchweight, where's guys that Pac is looking to fight and who will be asked to come down are fighters who will struggle to come down below the welterweight limit......fighters like Cotto and Mosley may end up weakening themselves to the point it will effect their performance because they are now natural welterweights who have no business coming down to the next division below.......

Thats the major difference between the Chavez-Whitaker fight and Pac's future proposed opponents who may struggle mightily to come down from 147 lbs.

Because it's well known Roach has said they will not fight Cotto or Mosley unless they are drained.

Norris-Taylor was a catchweight too at 150.5 lbs
DLH-Hopkins was a 158 lb catchweight yet Hop cuts to 156 and flat as he was, he still took him out
Hearns-Leonard II was a catchweight for 163 lbs
James Toney needs a ****in catchweight
