Not badly, but I thought he was definitely staggered a little bit against Valuev in one of the later rounds, near the bell, I think round 11. He was on the ropes and took a few shots flush and looked at least shaken. But no shame in that, Valuev is a big guy and it was almost the end of the fight, Chagaev was visibly winded at that point.
well i followed him in amateurz and if im not mistaken he fought legendary felix savon on at least one occasion and either beat him onetime or got close cant remember for sure point is savon hit like hell and chag waz known for his granite chin which was the reason IMO that he waz able to hang with the more athletic savon i cant remember if he was ever floored in the pros he may have but either way i think his chin is one of his main assets
Chagaev beat Savon two times in amateurs. He has granite chin. Can box, good tech. I expect Vlad to win but Chagaev was preparing for Valouev, tall fighter, 7 feet 2 inches tall, Vlad is only 6 feet 7 inches tall, but much quicker than Valouev. Vlad was not preparing for southpaw, so this makes fight interesting.
Chagaev was wobbled momentarily in the opening seconds of round three with Carl Drummond from a right hook to the jaw
Yeah, he looked worryingly fragile for a couple occasions against Drummond. It was an odd sight as before that he'd generally been very durable so it was strange to see him...not staggering about or anything, but looking disquieted by shots. A bigger point is that he's not fought many real heavyweight punchers though, has he? Virchis can bang a bit, but that's about it. Despite his size Valuev is no power puncher. Wladimir should be by far the biggest puncher he's fought so far. Go through 12 rounds of those shots smiling, and I'll be ready with the chin complements.
I do not remember seeing him hurt but because people keep bringing the Crummond fight, I will rewatch it carefully.
I hate to brag, but I am the first one on this forum to have brought up the Drummond fight. I'm convinced that Chagaev was stunned and wobbled at the end of the third round. He recovered quickly, but still, he looked shaken. If Chagaev takes Vlad's right hand full force on the jaw, we could see a replay of Godzilla leveling Tokyo.
I cannot see Chagaev being able to take even the light one-two's from Wlad that he threw against Peter
I think it can be said that he has fairly solid chin, above average I think. Unfortunately I have not seen enough of his fights, but following the HW scene like I do, I cant recall it ever being mentioned of him being seriously hurt at any point in his pro career. Wobbled a few times, but thats it. And at HW, being wobbled is to be expected. Men this big, most anyone can get hurt at some point or another
If his chin is really that solid, as the evidence suggests, I can see a mercy/ref/cuts stoppage late. Don't think it will go the full distance.
Chagaev only lost three fights in 80 matches in the amateurs and all three losses were points related. As a professional he was never been down. His knees have never buckled, nor has he had to clinch after receiving a hard blow. I think its safe to say Chagaev has an excellent chin.
