Cotto looked sharper losing vs Margo than winning vs Clottey.

The first 7 rounds vs Margo Cotto looked Crisp and impressive in losing vs Margarito. Yet he looked slow, leathargic and unimpressive vs Clottey in a victory, go figure.

He had blood in his eyes from the 3rd round on, that put a bit of a damper on is performance.

cotto got outboxed by a slow clottey for the first 3 rounds, and got a lucky kd, becasue clottey was off-balanced.

This is the reason- Cotto had to fight with blood in his eyes. It's almost getting annoying seeing these threads now.

clottey has horrible footwork, and needs some work on his offensive game IMO....

Pretty easy looking "sharp" and "crisp" against someone as slow and lumbering as Margarito. Cotto had time to take a dump and read the paper in between punches during a Margarito combination and still throw his counter shots. Clottey was giving Cotto much much more to think about, literally, with all the unpredictable pouncing and waiting stuff.

Anyway, the reality is more complex, IMV, and has way more to do with the 'undefeated fighter' wave of confidence Cotto was riding going into the Margarito fight. Go back to the period just prior to Judah and Mosley and you will see a relatively slower and more deliberate Cotto much like the Clottey version. If Cotto got his mentals shaken up a little bit whatever. He's still completely there. People are treating him like a ****ing girl at this point. Anyone who has been following fighters for more than 5 minutes knows this happens to virtually all of them when they get their little cherry busted.

That's because unlike the slow, one-dimensional, easy-to-hit but very aggressive and always coming Margarito, Clottey showed great defense, smart moves, ring intelligence, great punch selection and adaptability.

Pavlik beat the **** out of Miranda but looked slow, lethargic and unimpressive vs. Hopkins.

    Go figure.

Jeff Young, you are a TERRIBLE poster. I have never seen someone agree with you on these boards. Everything you say is either greeted with confusion or just plain silence. Your opinions are a joke, please, improve your posting.

This. I do think Margarito's speed and defense is underrated (in the Cotto fight) but your point is exactly correct. Clottey just DOESN'T give the gaps to punch like Margocheato does, he is very tight.

'A responsible type defense' - Showtime commentator (can't remember which).

Cotto though back and won the fight be sweeping the late rounds, the middle rounds were all Clottey's
I think he showed heart and skill to pull this one out, Cotto struggles with clottey any time in his career because Clottey is a good fighter

a gigantic 2 and a half inch gash in one of the worst spots you can have it definatly changed the fight...

they could have very easily stopped the fight b/c of the cut at any point

exactly, no one would walk through clottey, especially with a cut early in the fight..
