Has Chagaev ever been hurt?

You don't think the paucity of true heavyweight punchers on his resume leaves a question mark? I don't know who he fought at amateur but with headgear and just three rounds involved it's not quite the same thing.

I'd have more confidence in it if he'd faced some real bangers, but Wlad is going to be far and away the only real one Chagaev will have faced.

Like I say, if he goes 12 rounds there then I'll call it 'excellent'. Benefit of the doubt says it's a good one, but jury's out on true excellence 'til then.

Michael Grant had never been down until he fought Golota and he'd faced better punchers like Izon and Savarese, you could've called his chin excellent as well up until Nov '99.

I know I'm splitting hairs here but in general terms like 'great' and 'excellent' get thrown around far too often for boxers and I'd like a little more solid evidence before chucking around such labels.

 

Yep! He looked quite mediocre vs Drummond,but on the other hand he very often tends to look average against this kind of opposition(Fields,Sprott).

Well,Virchis was his stable mate and friend and they didnt want to fight each other.
11 rounds no action-last round they went for each other to get the victory.Quite a lot of ring observers had Virchis closely ahead on points after 12 rounds.
Anyway! That fight doesnt mean that much!

People are claiming he has a great chin, because it will make Wlad look better when he knocks him out, and/or be an excuse if this chump manages to go the distance with Wlad.

There is very little evidence to suggest that Chagaev is iron-chinned, he hasn't fought anyone with a big enough punch to test it. He may very well be iron-chinned, but we just don't know. If Chageav does have an iron chin, then he is simply going to get beaten up for a longer amount of time on saturday.

 

In the pros he has never been hit by a big puncher, but he managed to beat Savon twice or so in the amateurs (unlike Tua, Brewster and Briggs, who got knocked out). So it cannot be bad by any means - granite? Like you said, we'll see on Saturday.

 

Well. At least he ate dozens of flush uppercuts from John Ruiz, and it didn't dent him. I expected him to go down sooner or later from the sheer number of those he took, but he didn't fade. Question is, how well does he take a one-two.

His legs didn't wobble, but he was definitely stunned at one point against Drumond.

Virchis is a big puncher though. I don't know why people are saying he hasn't faced any.

 

He took a couple of good right hands from Drummond. He seems to have a good chin.

 

When "fighting" Virchis, both him and Virchis silently protested against their promoter Kohl making them fight (they're friends and stablemates) by not hitting each other AT ALL. They were hitting their gloves doing light sparring not throwing any punches for long periods of time for 11 rounds, just fighting the last round halfway real who the "winner" should be. Both didn't get hit hard in that fight because they did not wan't to.

Wlad's big and he's strong but he can look really crap at times.
The fights he has lost, he looked absolutely pathetic in at the time of the stoppage. I'm not a fan of him one bit. I rate Vitali really highly, but Wlad has too many weaknesses that will be exposed by really good /elite fighters.

I really hope Chagaev gives it a go.

 

In that case, he should rule the heavyweight division for the next 10-15 years.
