After all this guy lost against Paolo Vidoz at the Olympics but had a huge group of followers and 'believers'. But after Wlad, McCline and Chambers I think it is quite clear: The hype was bigger than Fat Sam.

I think people wanted to believe, since the heavyweight division was in such dire trouble. Alot of guys who showed any type of progress got overate. I remember a former editor on a boxing news site saying Sultan Ibragimov was the future of the heavyweights.

Peter came out KOing people with good one punch power, and people wanted a heavyweight to follow.

Also, I think the Toney fights (especially the 2nd [I thought he lost the first]) caused not onlythe people to overate Peter, but caused Peter to overate himself as far as boxing skills went.

His spririt was broken in that 12 round against Wladimir KlitschKO. He understood that he was vulnerable. He was not quite the smae since. Vitaliy KlitschKO just finished him.

However, you have to admit that Peter managed a lot of rounds agaisnt KlitschKO. It is really hard to manage so many rounds against both KlitschKOs.

Any undefeated heavyweight with a few nice KO's is going to get over-hyped. People always call them the savior of the division just trying to do anything to bring a breath of fresh air into a division that is a complete disaster.

I think you are right. McCline had good power but not exceptional, he floored Sam peter a few times and showed he doesn't have that 'granite chin' people thought he had.

i would say dissapointing, if he actually trained isntead of his road-work consisting of walking to the fridge and back to the sofa....i think he would be legit

Not a hype-job, but he fell short of what he could have been if he actually bothered to train.

I actually re-watched part of the Wlad-Peter fight and noticed a HUGE difference in how he was then, and today. He was way more aggressive, used angles at time, and lighter. A lot can change in four years time...

I think his hyped status came as a result of him being a decent HW fighter from Nigeria. He was always gonna be easy to market and has a huge following in Africa; give those credentials to a promoter and -WHAM- you have fighting gold. I don't think it's any coincidence he became HW champ but ultimately he was found out.

the term hypejob though depends on their success after the hype. kelly pavlik is a hypejob who hasn't done anything to warrant the praise YET...in a few years we may say that people saw something special in him. it's a gamble building these guys up. with peter, he never ended up doing anything to warrant the hype and there is nothing special about it. some hypejobs really become something amazing (ie: SRL) others don't (aaron davis)

I thought he was a big hype-job from day 1. "Looking back" I see that even hype-job was overrating him.
