Alexis Arguello vs. Meldrick Taylor at 140

I say Meldrick gives AA plenty of trouble with speed. However, Arguello solves him gradually with pinpoint punching, resulting in a late round TKO for Alexis.

 

Late, late K.O for Alexis, who would time Taylor throughout the fight and stop him late on. If Chavez could deck Taylor with the right, Alexis would put him down and out.

 

although arguello a great great fighter, i think its more fifty/fifty depending on taylors fight and taylors size advantage. i think if taylor stays in and fights then he will eventually get stopped. but if he uses his boxing ability he can outbox the slower footed arguello. taylor was able to beat the bigger and possibly harder hitting aaron davis at 147.

 

I go for Taylor here. peak at 140 whereas even though Alexis was still a force to be reckoned with i don't think he was at his best at this weight. I see Taylor outboxing though getting caught with some hefty shots but winning on points 8-4.

 

Over 12 Taylor might hang on for a decision but i'd take Arguello by stoppage over 15.

 

I agree on the winner, I think at this weight and stage of their respective careers Taylor is really all over him, though his defence is actually worse than Pryors so i definitely see him getting stopped as well and see the flipside argument.

 

I've stayed away from the 15 round scenario due to the fact that Taylor never went there. I think Alexis could be struggling over 15 at that stage of his career at what I'm sure would be a fast pace.

 

Don't forget where Taylor ended up over 12 vs Chavez. Arguello too is a very debilitating puncher and will get his licks in just like Chavez. Seldom was Arguello the one struggling late and even at 140 vs Pryor he did enough to stop many a man.

 

The Arguello of the first Pryor fight would KO Meldrick in the middle rounds after a competitive battle. Taylor may be slightly ahead on points at the time he gets caught.

 

Fair comment and one of the reasons why I steered clear of the 15 round scenario. Taylor in the 12th against Chavez is why I would be worried about him.
I still think that in a fast paced fight and taking a lot of shots Arguello could be struggling as well. Chavez for me was more in his prime when he fought Taylor and slipped/rolled with a lot of the shots but was still outworked.
As it happens, the more I think about this, the more I lean towards Alexis over 15. A lot of late stoppage wins, Escalera x2, Olivares.
What it comes down to is that I actually rate Taylor very highly on the strength of his losing effort against Chavez.
Arguello I rate higher but i have reservations about him at 140 and at that stage of his career.

 

JT, you may well be right. Chavez and Arguello have similar styles when it comes to steady pressure and precision. I think Arguello's outside work would see Taylor faced with something Chavez couldn't give him. The outside ability with the jab and right hand down the pipe. He's so much more rangey at distance than Chavez, who was pretty limited at long range. Mid-range and inside were where Julio excelled.

 

taylor starts well and after a few good rounds of sparring mel walks in and gets caught by a 1-2. rocking him. basicly ending the fight.

Arguello by late round stoppage. Taylor, not being a big puncher, had nothing to hurt alexis with. He would win many of the rounds based on workrate but would be losing at the same time. Arguellos punches to the body and jarring rights to the jaw would take their toll somewhere around the 11th.
