It seems that they are trying to make the fight at a catchweight. Pac wants 144 and Cotto wants 145. The question is: If the fight is fought at a catchweight should Cotto's WW belt be on the line? In a recent Bob Arum interview he said that Cotto's belt would be on the line. I think that if Pac wants to make history and become the first man to win titles in 7 division he should fight at 147 for Cotto's title. There is no championship belt for the catchweight division. I don't think that Cotto's belt should be up for grabs at a catchweight but if it was at 147 then I wouldn't have a problem with it.
if the belt is on the line the fight should take place at 147, if its not at 147 the title should not be at stake.
isn't 141-147 considered welter? I assume the belt would be on the line. A clause in the contract would point out the weight limit, gloves, etc. Not too sure about it though...
Exactly right, Jackolythe. 147 is the welterweight LIMIT, not the welterweight weight. Cotto and Pac can fight at any weight they want as long as it's under 147 and Cotto can legitimately put his title on the line. Whether or not he SHOULD may be a different story, but he certainly can if he wants.
Fighting at a catch weight for a world title is DISGRACE TO BOXING. I'm getting sick of Roach's underhand tactics in cherry-picking opponents and draining fighters to unreasonable weights. Even though I admit DLH and his team were largely to blame for that circus of a fight.
I see no problem as long as the fight is at 147lbs. I would also ask how is Manny ranked at 147lbs but we all know that could be fixed very quickly.
I love how the fighters themselves agree to these catchweights, their teams who know their fighters like the back of their hands ok it, but yet we have these keyboard homo's who do nothing but cry about it :|:|:|
Judah weighed in lighter than 147 for the IBF fight with Clottey as long as its above 140 i don't see why not.
If Pacquaio moves up to 147 then i see no reason y it shouldent be for the WBO welterweight championship
Whitaker 142 Chavez 145 for the Welterweight championship of the world. its been with us ever since. i dont see reason not to stake Cotto's belt.
It's one thing if a guy voluntarily comes in under the limit because he conditioned himself so and another when he is contractually obligated to do so. You want a welterweight title, you gotta be willing to fight a guy that weighs 147
Nobody is crying about it. It is a legitamate question and everybody else's post seems sensible and repsectful except for yours.
