Whatever suits the two fighters is fine by me. Finding quite hilarious all the experts that know Miguel Cotto's body so intimately! "He can weigh in at 146 to fight Clottey, but 145 would leave him weight drained" "144 would be unfair to Cotto". How do you all know?
If they should fight . . . it should be at 143 max. Otherwise Pacquiao will be in a big dis-advantage. And this applies to Mosley too.
Pac should fight at 147 and fight for Cotto's belt, he should want to fight at 147 so he can get the belt.
I think Pac has a good shot at Cotto at 147. Might as well get that belt in his 6th weight division. Would also silence the haters....for at least a month.
weight discussion is currently in the process so if both cotto and pac agreed to a certain weight, that means they knew they can make and fight at that weight, no excuses. all things said that cotto would be drained below 145 or pac being bloated above 142 or 144 are all assumptions.
Who says Pac has to be above 143 or 144? If thats his comfortable weight, fight at welter and come in under. Whats the problem?
they are actually making the earliest possible excuses in the event pac would beat cotto below 147. the amazing thing here is that it was not the cotto fans but the joyboys trying to dish pac out when we all knew that this fight would really happen at a catchweight.
i'm ok for cotto to go down to 145. this based on cottos weigh in versus clottey and his statement that he can go down 145. obviously he knows he can go down to that weight without much effect.
Probably true, but irrelevant to my points. Imagine Bernard wanting to fight Maskaev at 187, or Mayweather challenging Pavlik at 154. We have seventeen weight divisions as it is. Fighters should be able to fit into ONE of those divisions. Greats like SRR, Duran, Hearns and Mosley moved up without seeking a catchweight. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I'm fine with the catchweight if Cotto is, and it's necessary to make the fight. But it's no longer for a welterweight title and it takes some of the shine off, should he win. Pac's victory over Oscar was at 147 and looms much larger in his legacy than it would have at say, 144.
Yes, and not that it matters to Leonard, not too many (myself included) consider him to have ever been a light-heavyweight champion. In fact, his weight-draining of Lalonde taints even his only 168 lb victory. He was probably a three weight champion, without controversy (Though Marvin might dispute that). That's why I did not include him in the list I gave of greats who did NOT seek catchweight bouts.
