At the time there was an explicit contractual gaurantee that made that the winner of Tyson Douglas to immediately face Evander Holyfield. At the time it was expected that Tyson Holyfield would square off but after Tyson lost to Douglas- Douglas Holyfield had to happen. Holyfield beating Douglas made Tyson-Douglas II somewhat irrelevant. Especially since Douglas seemed to retire after the Holyfield loss only to return to boxing a few years later. Tyson's camp did pursue this fight at some point but Douglas was not interested.
Holyfield's camp never offered Douglas the $24m. That was the guarantee that was set before what was supposed to be Tyson-Holyfield. Tyson was supposed to get $24 million and Holyfield was gauranteed $12 million. Tyson lost and therefore Douglas got Tyson's purse. It was never a situation that Tyson could have pursued a rematch because there was no rematch clause that was set and the Holyfield fight was pretty much set in stone. In order for Tyson to have gotten a rematch he would have to wait until Holyfield Douglas was over. That would have been the soonest possible time for him to have gotten a rematch.
then tyson was slated to fight holyfield, got delayed because of a tyson rib injury, tyson goes to jail and the rest is history right?
Thats why King made such a stink about the long count. He didnt have options on Douglas even though he gave him the shot at the title. King instantly lost control of all three belts when Douglas won. Tyson was signed to fight Douglas if Douglas could get past Savarese but he was quickly knocked out by big Lou. Tyson would have really done serious damage to Douglas at that point.
Douglas, as the saying goes, was all wrong for Tyson. A guy with reach and accuracy and some starch on the end of his shots, like Douglas, like Lewis, is gonna give Mike trouble any day of the week. They fight again, Mike still has his hands full. But these days, we are all Tyson fans... God bless Mike, our hearts are broken for you. Hang in there, brother.
It didn't happen because Tyson had stalled fighting Holyfield for so long. Heck, he even stalled him just to make this fight. As a result, before the HW champion (whoever that happened to be at the time) could even take the time to blow his nose, Holyfield had to get a title shot. He'd just been made to wait too long. Incidentally, there was some talk of a rematch in the '90s, when Douglas came out of his coma and made his comeback. Of course, that ended once Douglas was blown out by Savarese.
You are correct. About a week after the fight, both Tyson & Douglas were in the HBO studio, with Larry Merchant asking the questions. Tyson made his wishes for a rematch well known, making sure Douglas & Merchant knew he wanted a rematch asap. When asked about this, Douglas sat on the fence a little, but you got the impression he wanted to defend against Holyfield first. You cannot blame him because his purse for that fight was something like $24,000,000. Tyson wanted the rematch, I'm not so sure Douglas did! James probably knew Tyson would be much more prepared second time around!
Yeh its a shame the re-match never happened. I think Tysons champ should of pushed for a re-match after he got out of prison (96-99), it would of looked better for Tyson to have beaten the man that caused to biggest upset in boxing history.
That was the reason Douglas came back. The fight with Tyson was on the table for him. He was unfortunately KO'd by Louis Monaco after the bell on Tuesday Night Fights, which caused Arum to back track a little, but Douglas was supposed to get Tyson after McNeely.
Ah really, i never knew that. If Tyson did beat him in the re-match it would have left a much better legacy (not that is isnt great already). And based on Douglas' performances then Tyson would have beaten him in spectacular fashion!
