Taylor starts of blazing really landing his fast shots on Arguello for the first few rounds in a magnificant deisplay of speed. Arguello slowly comes back timing Taylor and catching him with huge right hands and maybe getting into a bit of a brawl where Arguellos body work pays off. Arguello late KO
Close fight, I dont see Arguello winning a decision, he could KO Taylor & may very well do but I lean towards a Taylor pts victory myself. Dont shoot !
Don't shoot? Anyway I'm in the camp that thinks AA's power, skills and smarts prevails. Someone also mentioned the range factor (vis a vie chavez being more mid range and Arguello a long range game). I think that factors in also. Also Meldrick although very good, may not be on Pryor's level (not to mention the bottle). El Flaco, though not prime at 140 I think takes it, based on the above, and counters Taylors early workrate.
Arguello would stop Taylor late in the fight. Taylor would outpoint him early, but Arguello's pinpoint shots would take their toll and wear down Taylor.
Personally, I think there nothing that Alexis can do to win this one.Meldrick was at his best weight here, so Alexis is out of his league.Meldrick wins by strong UD.
Great matchup. This one would be worth the PPV IMO. Sometimes it can be easy to forget how good Meldrick Taylor was before he fought Chavez. He left his career in that ring but then again it took another legend to do that to him. Taylor`s speed was stuff of legend, hand speed mainly. Blazing flurries 4s and 5s. Pryor`s speed gave Arguello fits and Taylor was quicker though not as agile or powerful as the Hawk. Meldrick Taylor had a tough chin and a huge heart. The guy was always in tremendous condition and he was at his peak. On the other hand Arguello was Arguello. He had so much experience by that time which would be a huge factor. ETM would make adjustments and set Meldrick up as the fight goes on. It took a lot of punches to finally break Meldrick Taylor`s chin. AA hit a bit harder than Julio shot for shot but Chavez had that brutal inside game. If pressed to make a pick I would lean towards Arguello coming on late and getting the stoppage but he would be put through the ringer.
If Taylor uses his superior natural attributes and disciplined plan Taylor wins on pts. However like fellow gifted boxers Terry Norris and Evander Holyfield once hit that plan went out the window. Arguello patiently stalks Taylor and his patent body punches and textbook right and uppercuts slow down a trading Taylor. No final round controversial here. Arguello by stoppage in 10 rds.
I was thinking about commenting on this but looking back through it saw that I already did nearly 9 years ago. I still feel the same way about it.
I think the problem is that Taylor at some point in the bout is going to start trading more and more with Arguello and at some point those righthand bombs are going to stop Taylor. In a 12 rounder I could see Taylor building up a lead and then getting stopped late say round 11. Arguellos power is not something you can recover from fully and he was a great finisher. Take into account he was a great body puncher and that spells trouble for Taylor.
