the answer is no. you've read 4 kings? the section about why duran could NEVER could called a coward after what he did in the hears fight is all you need. he KNEW he was going to get knocked out in the 2nd round, everyone did, but he went out there like a man.

add that to the fact that he was the greatest fighting machine to ever enter ring, and no he's not overrated. now i don't consider him the greatest boxer, far from it and robinson/ali get ranked above, as do pep and others. but greatest FIGHTER? that's all roberto.

yes, i think i just came

Oscar who started if a little below lightweight beat Sturm although many felt he got a gift and fought Hopkins strong before the body shot. I doubt anyone would pick against Floyd or Pac if they decided to fight Edison Miranda.

I personally rate Castillo higher myself, not for any 'he does so and so better than him' type comparisons, but because i rate Castillo in terms of accomplishments personally. It very well may be Floyd's best win, though i likely think that is Corrales.

See th eproblem with the likes of Danny_Rand is, he thinks that me and McGrain are in luv with fighters from the past and think they are automatically better than fighters from today, which is nonsense as i know McGrain quite well from this board and vice versa. And we both rate fighters objectively no matter the era.

I know you mentioned that he may have got a gift, but come on, even mentioning the Sturm fight is poor. Sturm clearly won that to anyone who watched it.

Castillo, Corrales, De La Hoya. Corrales and Castillo being the 2 best 130-135lb fighters of their generation and De La Hoya being his 6th belt in 5th weight class. Maybe Hatton.

Hernandez too. Throw in a Jesus Chavez maybe and a couple of other 130 guys. The thing is that those who saw Palomino box live knew that he was a fun guy to watch, and a very good boxer who fell short of big wins.

You guys are acting like im calling Duran a scrub. He was obviously the best little man to ever fight in the sport. I just wouldnt put him in the top 5 of all time. Probably top 10. Largely because I dont think his work above 147 was all that great

Thanks for clearing up your act! Hi, i'm teeto, nice to meet you!

I do think a case can be made for top 5 though, but it simply depends on your criteria and who else you see as achieved more and therefore deserves to be ahead of him, there is a host of names as i say, depending on your personal criteria.

One of the most catastrophically and comically shocking, shoddy and downright shite posts I have ever had the misfortune to read.

Duran was one of the most skilled fighters of all-time, and his achievements make him a top 10 ATG.

    The man had two careers.

One where he was one of the best, if not the best, lightweight champion ever - losing only once in over 70 fights against the best that division had to offer (and that defeat was twice avenged). A dominant and brilliant champion.

The second was a career he had no right to have. Between the ages of 30 and 40, this former lightweight went to war the very best fighters from welter to middle. Yes, sometimes he lost badly (Leonard II, Hearns, Benitez, Laing), but it cannot be forgotten that Duran was always the smaller, older, lighter, slower, weaker man in the ring. He produced some incredible performances too (Leonard I, Hagler, Cuevas, Moore, Barkley), and showed that even when completely physically outgunned, use of sheer applied boxing skills and a whole lot of grit and heart can make the difference.

His achievement in winning the middleweight title 17 years after the lightweight title is a milestone that will stand up to almost any other achievement in boxing history, and will be a lasting legacy.

You could not be more wrong.

i have a good idea of who the posters who know the history and can make a good unbiased assesment of the info. i have no where near the knowledge some of the posters like mcgrain has but i know enough to factor in the history of the landscape surrounding a fight in any era. as i stated in an earlier post, it goes back to recognizing the cycles that these stories go through and that comes from living them or being smart enough to recognize when someone is giving you valuable information.

:deal co-sign. if you don't respect duran dude, no offense you don't belong in boxing. when he applied himself, one of the greatest of all time. when he didn't apply himself, still one of the greatest. duran's accomplishments could not fit in this forum, never mind one thread. he is beyond compare
