I became a boxing fan because of Duran. As far as the orginal poster goes, I'm not going to dignify a reply to his goofy comment.
Yeah he's somewaht overrated in the sense he is rated higher than SRL which is a joke. Especially when SRL was the best of the fab 4. Not only that his nuthuggers make every excuse in the book for the SRL rematch in which he QUIT but love to bring up the first fight which was close as hell.
What's your argument for rating SRL higher? Pound for pound Duran gets ranked higher I think it's logical..
His record against the fab 4 that alone should put him above Duran. Especially since Duran was 1-3 against them.
duran was a better fighter in every sense. and the first fight wasn't close. that was the first fight i ever scored and scoring it sense it's not as close as everyone makes it. the second fight was a joke and a product of timing. duran took a prime hagler to the wire, ruled the lightweight division becoming the best in division history, battered a peak middleweight barkely and caused hell in welter and junior middle when he bothered to train. SRL is a great but Duran is a legend. Best pure fighter ever. I don't give a **** who won two of there three fights: the only one that matters is the ****ing first and every fan knows it.
I disagree he wasn't better Duran couldn't deal with SRL in the second fight he had no answer for him. If he was a better fighter in every sense of the word he wouldn't have quit.:deal Stop making excuses for him. Duran can do no wrong on this forum and it's sickening. I'm not even going to bring up him being KTFO against Hearns and other losses.
Nonsense. Duran a better fighter then Leonard? By what criteria? Leonard beat Hagler, a much better fighter then Iran Barkley. Who did he give hell to besides a few b level opponents? They are both legends. SRL ranks higher because he beat better fighters. Benitez, Hagler, Hearns are better then every fighter that Duran ever beat, not including Leonard, who he lost to twice there after.
i just can't rate srl higher. it's a respectful disagreement but i rank duran better because he was truly epic and unstoppable during his time at lightweight. and well past his best, his glimpses of brilliance (cuevas, barkely, moore) were enough to dominate very good and great fighters. srl is still a top 20 though in my book so no big deal
Wow Great post It about sums it up, no need to get into details. A man that stepped up from LW into WW and Middle in a talent rich time, and had good success, when father time may have said otherwise. Speaks volumes as to how good he was.
