Duran was the greatest lightweight champion in boxing history. He is not overrated, not by a long shot.

I say that Duran is over rated and I know plenty about boxing....

Was Duran a great fighter??? Yes

Was Duran the best of his era??? NO, Not only NO but HELL NO.

People try and hang it all on ONE fight with Leonard, a fight in which Leonard was green and let Duran **** him off enough to fight the ONLY way that Duran had a chance of winning. And in doing so Duran BARELY won. The rematch spoke volumes. Ray Boxed Duran know that he could win that way and he quit. He lost to Hearns, Lost to Hagler lost to Benitez. In fact Duran was 1-5 vs the best fighters that he faced. And the one win was somewhat a fluke.

Not by everyone. Duran's a hell of a fighter, but I'm not about to put him over Sugar Ray Leonard. You knock out prime Benitez, prime Hearns, beat an ATG in Hagler outside of your natural weight class, and make Duran quit, and you deserve to come out on top. Takin' nothing away from the Fab 4 themselves, of course. :thumbsup

Man I used to love palominos body work. VICIOUS!!!

And I don't know if it's just me but every time I look at Pacman, I think of Palamino. Not fighting styles, but facial features. Then again it could just be the 'stache.

Moore wasn't ****, a very young and green fighter who had no business holding his belt and no business in the ring with Duran. Barkley is no great fighter. Cuevas' best win: some argentinean named Campanino.

Duran flat out quit against SRL. Again: Take away the first SRL and NOBODY talks about Duran this way, he's best known for who he LOST to, not who he beat. You didn't 'disagree respectfully', you copped a full-on shitty attitude to defend an ignorant statement. Duran greater than SRL??? Pfffft.... get the **** outta here...

In fact, in addition to PBF and JCC at 135, I'll add Pac and JMM at 135 and KT at 140 and SRR, Mosley, Tito and ODLH among MANY others who would kick the **** out of Duran at 147, and that's just modern era fighters.

Like quitting the fight as soon as he realizes he's gonna get KTFO? Those attributes?

Duran is obviously an ATG but I really wish people would stop acting like the Hagler fight was really close, just because 3 drunk judges said it was. Duran did a good job defensively and showed how well he took a punch, becoming the first title challenger of Duran to go the distance, but it was not a close fight.

    Duran won like 4 rounds.

That fight was only slightly closer than the Benitez fight was (another fight with drunk judges).

There seems to be this common pattern in posters in this forum and often in others.

People who dont think Duran is overrated have usually seen a large catalogue of his fights and the fights of his opposition, they have actually analyzed the state of boxing and the divisions of the time that Roberto was fighting and they have actually watched the fights others use to discredit him and make their own minds up about them...Most of these people have done the research.

People who think Duran is overrated almost always...have not. Its often starts with these guys rubbishing the lightweight reign that Roberto had simply on what boxrec has told them and it goes from there.

Its really not hard to figure out...The guy is one of the best fighters there has ever been...Thats just how it is.

    :good:good

Some of the idiots on this thread need to go watch fighters like marcel, buchanan, de jesus, palomino etc and start watching duran of the late 70s and then come back and say he is overrated and an unskilled brawler with basic boxing skills.
