Arena's policy of matching it's rising Cuban stars with tough competition finally caught up with 2004 Heavyweight Gold Medalist Fat Man Odlanier Solis (14-0). The superbly talented but lazy, overweight and indisciplined Cuban contender could be in a do or die situation in his Top Rank debut: according to ESPN, he could face unbeaten top US prospect Kevin Johnson (22-0), who's coming from a career-best win over Devin Vargas. It's not signed yet or anything, but Solis co-promoter Bob Arum is looking for quality support for the Aug 15 Donaire-Cazares main event in Las Vegas, and this fight sounds pretty damn good.

It's a very risky move, because Johnson would give the hardest fight of an in shape Solis in his pro career, but Solis is not in shape, he's coming back from an injury and just weighed the highest ever (262 lbs). It's very simple: if Solis is serious about his pro career, he'll have to put on a real quality performance, otherwise he will lose. Johnson is a real fighter who couldn't care less about amateur achievements (ask Vargas), if Solis doesn't show his absolute best, he will be another quality name on fast rising Kevin's resume.

Risky match-making, but I like it. Solis needs a kick in the ass, and it's his choice how he reacts to it.

The fight is OFF for good. From Rafael's blog:

The bout I was most looking forward to on Top Rank's "Latin Fury 12" on Oct. 10 was the heavyweight fight between undefeated Odlanier Solis and Kevin Johnson. I said "was" because the fight is off. Johnson and promoter Joe DeGuardia scrapped the bout (for the second time) even though they had committed to it. Top Rank's Bob Arum gave them his blessing to bail for a pretty good reason: Johnson is at the top of the list to challenge titleholder Vitali Klitschko on Dec. 12 in Germany. Klitschko and his team are that confident that he'll beat Cristobal Arreola on Sept. 26. Like a lot of people, I am looking forward to Klitschko-Arreola. It should be an entertaining scrap while it lasts. But let's be honest -- is anyone actually picking Arreola to win? Arreola knows nobody is picking him and he's very cool about it. He says he'll shock the world. I do admire his honesty and the fact that he doesn't get mad in the slightest about his big underdog status. He's an easy guy to root for and if he does pull the upset, it would be absolutely huge for American heavyweight boxing and a real bummer for Johnson.

    I love it.

Guys with a great amateur pedigree should be matched hard - guys like Solis and Gamboa can't possibly learn anything by beating up journeymen.

This is especially good for Solis - his attitude and dedication to the sport have been very disappointing thus far. It'll be interesting to see if this motivates him to get in shape and put in the type of performance he's capable of.

I like Solis, but Kevin Johnson is no joke.

I would expect Johnson to take this if it takes place August 15th.

This will be a great fight. Johnson is no push-over at all.

Much like Witherspoon-Arreola from a few years back, I love seeing undefeated guys go at it. Especially in the heavyweight division. We need to separate the men from the boys in a lot of divisions in boxing and this is the perfect way to do it.

I agree, and I would easily pick Johnson in this one.

And I think Johnson would beat Solis via UD in a stinker of a fight.

Johnson by decision here. I like both of these guys and think they both could be real contenders if things played out right for them. But Johnson is better right now and would win in fight that might be more entertaining then some might think. It would be no Bowe-Holyfield but it could be alright.

I just saw the Johnson fight against Vargas. There, in the first round Vargas landed almost at will on Johnson. The end result of the fight shows that either Vargas doesn't pack a punch or Johnson has a very good shin, or both. Of course thereafter, when Vargas slowed down, Johnson came back with his arsenal, powerful enough to stop Vargas trying.

Now, if the fight comes to fructification, Odlanier will land as frequently in these 1st couple of rounds, and I would reduce the outcome of that fight to the respect he will be going to earn when his punches land. Solis will test Johnson's head and also deliver brutal body shots. Johnson, an undefeated fighter, will only go down when Solis will land hard enough. So it will be a good test, which will show how strong Odlanier really is.
Until now Solis has had little problems only with the giants he has encountered (Long 7'1' and Burnett 6'6''), Johnson is not that tall, just 6'3, therefore I believe Odlanier will take that one relatively easy. No way Johnson will take a decision against him. Solis will not need to even go down in weight to win this one.

For starters I don't think this fight even happens. Arum has always put out several names for his fighters and then comes in with someone of a lesser caliber, I suspect he does the same here. But if they were to fight then Johnson wouldn't be quite as aggressive as he was against Vargas. Solis has more offense then Vargas and that would keep Johnson more cautious. He'd use his jab a lot more against Solis and that would be the key to him beating Solis. Johnson has an excellent jab and would simply put rounds in the bank with it. If he is more aggressive then that would be playing into Solis' hands, I don't think Johnson would do this. He does a lot of jabbing and only mixes it up when he has to.

    Solis: 'I'd KO both Klitschkos!'

“To me this fight showed why nobody is interested in heavyweight boxing at the moment. Of course, Klitschko looked strong but that was merely because his opponent did absolutely nothing. It seems to me that all the guys who enter the ring with either Klitschko freeze with respect or are just not good enough to actually challenge the champions. I am the only worthy challenger out there.

I would knock out both Klitschkos as well. I am the one who will end their reign and I am ready to prove it anytime anyplace.” :rofl

Johnson has been a bit more active in his recent fights and it shows. He throws more punches and has showed good power. He'll beat Solis by UD.
