Ray Mercer and the ageing boxer with no money syndrome

  1. I like Mercer. He was always iron chinned until Shannon Briggs whooped his ass a few years ago

I don't think this is an overly difficult situation to remedy. Just ensure that a portion of their purse, (ie 10-20%) is put into some kind of retirement funds they can't access until a certain age. And if this applied to all fighters there would be ample funds available to ensure the funds were managed properly. That's basically how the rest of the world does it.

It puts into perspective how much punishment Wlad could actually take by not going down vs. mercer and also how tough Evander Holyfield was in his prime.

I always wanted to see a bare knuckle or boxing match between Mercer and Kimbo, after their match i always felt Mercer was paid to lose that match and told not to stand toe to toe for fear he'd destroy the temporary cash cow of Kimbo.

Mercer did Boxing proud with his sparking of Tim Sylvia.

The guy Mercer knocked out was 2 time UFC Heavyweight champion about 2 years ago. Randy Couture became a "Legend" because he moved up to Heavyweight and beat him by decision for the title.

he bruised klitchcos eye with a jab looked great but he was old and got crushed if he were younger mercer would be ourchamp w lennox gone but now he would just get beat by klicth he might can beat arreola and hay but he cant beat klitch much as i wanna see guys like him and hay and chris beat klitch theres nobody good in the hw division its not the klitches fault but they are the righning champs in a dumpster of a weight class

Ray Mercer did have a job, he was a sgt. in the army. He served about ten years before leaving to turn pro at about age 28 or something. He started boxing in the army and became inter-service military boxing champ thus qualifying for the Olympic team.

I wonder how much he got for KO'ing Tim Sylvia?? I know the MMA purses are smaller than in boxing at top level at least...but no idea what he'd have got paid for his latest MMA outing....I'd still guess its a few thousand $$ in which case he'll make more than enough money to live on - reasonably well. And I do agree that its hard to be sympathetic when a fighter as wasted more money than most of us ever see in our lifetimes....if they are that foolish then they get their reward later in life. Reap what you sow.

...forgot to ad - i'd love to see Mercer get another shot at Kimbo - but in a boxing ring. We all know that even an old old Mercer would destroy him.
