I agree with you he is not top 5 ATG in my opinion as well... but we cant take anything away from him esp. in an era where boxers are now being known for ducking something Duran was far from... my apology for not understanding what you meant by overrated...

Glad to see the general view of the forum is that Duran was a very special fighter at every weight up to 147. Like Manny P, Duran was very effective at the lower weights - especially lightweight. His relentless pressure plus head movement and punch power gave other fighters fits. The Brawl in Montreal is one of the very best fights - and performances - of all time. I wouldn't quite put Duran in the same bracket as Robinson but P4P he's probably the greatest of the Fab Four of the 80s even though he lost to all of them. People forget how far out of his natural weight classes Duran had come at that stage.

he was overrated. Leonard beat better guys. Hearns beat better guys. Hagler fought middleweights and was more at that level. Duran definetly overrated. In many year we will see how Duran was overrated. Look at the level Hearns beat for his titles.

If Kirkland Lang could beat Reberto, then Floyd would have schooled him.

He could beat u if you engaged him, if you moved and boxed hed have fits.

At worst top 5 lightweight of all time. Plently of people have him #1 (I'm not one of those people.) Beat the best boxer of his eara in Ray Leonard and won a middleweight belt when he was past his prime.
If my choices about Duran are Overrated, or what. The easy answer is "Or What."

Hearns did not beat better fighters than duran. Hearns best wins are benitez, Duran(past best and 19lb above best weight), cuevas, roldan and hill. That hardly matches up with Leonard, Buchanan, Marcel, De Jesus, Barkely, Palomino, Moore, Cuevas(past prime).

Leonard did beat better fighters i agree, leonard also has the top 4 wins in the history of the sport to my mind. Duran however has the best win ever IMO over a prime leonard 12lb above his natural weightclass.

Duran by the time he fought leonard the 1st time had been a world champ for 8 years, i don't really see the point in rating him with the other fab 4, he was much naturally smaller than them and was past his prime at about the time they where hitting theres. On a p4p level though only leonard can be rating higher than duran IMO (i rate duran higher myself but have no argument seeing leonard rated higher.)

Also your casual dismissal of some of duran earlier victims on this thread(marcel, buchanan and de jesus) i suspect is down to the lack of footage you have seen of them. They where top top class fighter, espicially buchanan and marcel

I said he is overrated by the way people seem to think about him. People think he is top 5 p4p usually. If that is the case he is overrated. His resume does not have the wins against legends that it should for that. Hearns beat bigger legends prime than Roberto ever did, but since Tommy lost to Hagler and Ray that diminishes him. I think Hearns is almost underrated. The way he demolished Duran speaks volumes. Duran was the co 154 pound champion when he fought Hearns, and Duran had fought at 154 pounds before Hearns ever did in 1978.

The Leonard fight does not count. He should have beat Ray in the rematch but instead he quit when he was starting to get nailed in round 8. Watch the fight on youtube. He was getting hit more to the head and that is when he quit. Buchanan is no Hearns or Leonard. Barkley and Moore were not great wins. Barkley had a perfect inside style for Duran and a year later he lost in one to Nigel Benn. Moore had 11 fights when he fought Duran. Palomino was not close to anything Duran was. Palomino was a good west coast Jackie McCoy fighter, but that doesn't say much since most guys from Westminster boxing club were not that great. He was great among that gym. All those fights you mention for Duran were not top notch wins except Ray, and then he quit. Ray dominated him. Hearns on the other hand beat champions Cuevas,Benitez,Duran,Hill. That is more significant. Duran also fought many over the weight fights when he was a lightweight, which then filled up his attention in those years. I have all the footage of Duran and Buchanan and Dejesus. Dejesus was the only real guy who could compare to Duran at the time, and he lost to Cervantes, who lost to Benitez and Pryor. If you study boxing and look into it you will see how Duran is a bit overrated. This thread is not a joke. It is legit and well warranted. If you say Duran was old when he fought his buddies Hagler,Hearns,Leonard and Benitez, then all you have to rate him best p4p is his lightweight reign. Does that put him p4p top 5???? I do not argue he is great. The question of the thread is Overrated or what? I just meant he is overrated compared to how most people put him at top 5 ever. There have been fighters in boxing history who fought great guys almost everytime out and won. Ali, Leonard,Robinson, Armstrong. list goes on and on. Duran didn't. I don't mean to sound like a know it all I am not. But on this subject I just wonder where the facts are to warrant best p4p. Duran always says he is the best and I guess he would.

If you call Duran the greatest fighter of all time - thats overrating him.

If you have Duran outside your top 10 fighters of all time - thats underrating him.

Anything in between, I can live with.
