I would have thought he would have had enough self respect to at least not want the KO on his record. What's he going to tell his grandkids now: "I was fighting for the Ring world heavyweight title and when it looked like the fight was slipping away from me I thought **** it I don't fancy this just give me the pay check and let me go home". - You think that's better than "I kept trying right up until the end".
TO all u guys who are giving Chagaev " credit "... Go tell that to Jake Lamotta and Joe Frazier and see what they say.. You'd be lucky if they dont smack you silly.
I agree he was totally done, would have ended up taking far more of a beating that need be. BUT i dont get the whole lets give chagaev credit/feel sorry for him. In essence he knew before the fight he had **** all chance...a counterpuncher with not a great deal of natural power against the man with the longest left hand in the world! add to that the fact he was getting probably one of his biggest paydays!! He gave it his best shot but inevitably failed...
His corner rightfully stopped it, he was eating real heavy punches at the end..he'd not made it out of the next round.... When your corner stops it...it is the corner's decision....not the fighters...and by then, he too knew his chances were slim to none, and Slim left town.
No, I'm neither a Brewster fan or hater he's someone I honestly just never think about. And I don't know if he got a lot of praise for quitting on his stool - I never read the ESB forums at the time but I never seen him get credit for it anywhere else.
You call a total domination, pillar to post, which came to a crescendo in round nine where Chagaev was almost knocked OUT.. (and would have been KOed had it continued)..merely the fight slipping away from him? That is beyond laughable.
Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Ray Leonard, Ray Robinson, Jack Dempsey, Roy Jones, ODLH, Evander Holyfield, and Pernell Whitaker all have stoppage losses on their record. Look how little respect that group gets. How little pride they must have in their accomplishments. Oh, the humanity. Oh, the shame of having a stoppage loss on your record. So much better for a fighter to avoid such a blight on their resume, joining that lowly crew, by take a pointless drubbing so a bunch of meathead pussies they don't know can nod approvingly into their Bud Lights. :dead
Haters hate... they are supposed to stand there taking turns hitting each other in the jaw, like Wrestlen....... Wlad can paint his face like a Kiss-nighmare and make terrible threats. Then hit the ref with a chair...make most happy.
You haven't seen Brewster's first fight against Wlad have you? How much toll do you think that took of him? I suggest you take a look at that fight and than you might come to the conclusion that if Brewster quits on his stool, it just HAS to be something serious. Let's not forget that Buddy convinced him to quit. Chagaev should go out hiding and never show his face on tv again. With this f*cking grin on his face after the fight:barf He must've thought before the fight ''Oh well I'm just gonna try it for that mount of money and it case the going gets too tough I'll just quit''. One could see from the beginning that there was no fire, no lion in him. Nothing. NB.: I don't want to take anything away from Wlad because he looked great. Quite boring as usual but technically awesome.
Whatever turn of phrase you want to use I would rather show my grandkids a scar I got fighting for the heavyweight title than tell them I was getting beat so I didn't see it through (not that I would have raised the subject of what to say to my grandkids if someone else hadn't).
The whole what? This happens all the time on forums...people take several different posters' opinions and statements and blend them together as though they represent one unified front. Makes things not only confusing but literally impossible to distinguish one sub-topic from another and impedes effective communication. There's almost no point if it's going to be like that.
to be fair chagaev was taking a lot of left hands but it wasnt until the 8th when wlad started FINALLY! unloading that he looked totally battered. The guy knew before the fight he had **** all chance but for the money and a small % chance he might do something......other than give people HEP B..he took the fight. I reckon he could have gone on but im glad it didnt because honestly WLAD has NO KILLER INSTINCT!
:goodSo well put- so eloquently worded. Exactly right. These guys were not in there getting nailed, over and over again, with that right hand. So how can they criticize Chag? He KNEW he was going to be put OUT in round ten. That was a certainty that EVERYone knew was coming.
