Personally I would throw in the Braxton Eddie Davis fight, pushing out the Hagler-Mugabi fight

Clinton and robert ungurean like this.

What a list of fights. The 80s had it all.

I strongly agree with 1st choice, and I watched number three earlier today. Spellbinding.

Have you seen Steve Cruz-Barry McGuigan on the card the tripple hitter? This is one of my favorites. Cruz was a last minute substitute fillling in and ended up scoring a big upset

The first 3 are interchangable. There was another thread discussing which Chacon fight was better and I'm on the fence about that.

I wouldn't rank Leonard-Hearns 1 that high, for the lack of sustained action. It showed great skill level and shifts in momentum, but the actualy action level for most of the fight left something to be desired. I think Lee-Locicero was a more deserving Fight of the Year for 1981.

Just reading that list brings a smile to my face.

Pintor-Gomez, MSM-Lopez and Duran-Barkley are personal favorites of mine.

And as an Aussie...Harding beating Andries is one of my fondest boxing memories. Though I didnt see it live, Ill still never forget the first time I saw it.

Man I wish Hawkins would post here...

For mine, he is the best poster I have ever read, especially for anything 70's 80's.

Anyway, here is my response to his post from the Cyberboxingzone:

    Good stuff Hawk.

Personally I'm glad you put Pryor-Arguello on top rather than Chacon-Limon/Edwards, because Pryor-Arguello was contested at a much higher skill level, which is a relevant consideration when talking great fights - at least in my opinion. Chacon's fights were great battles of will power with brutal violence, but they lacked a bit of refinement.

But on a slugfest note, if you're talking two blokes beating the living **** out of each other without too much in the way of tactics, then Kelvin Seabrooks vs. Thierry Jacob must make the list.

The only other fight I'd probably suggest, and only in the way of an honourable mention, is Eusebio Pedroza vs. Patrick Ford. That was a great fight imo, with Pedroza being uncharacteristically aggressive (at least uncharacteristic in that he became aggressive pretty much from the word go rather than waiting a while to pour it on) and though it became a bit one sided, Ford kept throwing shots and fighting until the last ounce of fighting spirit left his body. That fight ruined what would have been a very good fighter.

Pedroza-Ford is probably my favorite Pedroza performance..Only saw it once though..So wish I could get a copy of it.

Very impressive considering the hell Pat had given Sanchez.

Almost all of them are great picks. I'd take out the Mancni vs. Kim match. It wasn't close, and ended in tragedy.

I agree with you. Pop in Leonard-Hagler instead, it's a special fight whichever way you see it. I also think Leonard-Hearns is a wee bit higher than it should be, I would certainly have Muhammad-Lopez above it...wonderful list though.

Leonard-Hearns I was never a better fight than Leonard-Duran I.... no way in hell.

    Here is my top 5.....

    1. Chacon-Edwards II/Chacon-Limon IV (still cant fully decide)
    3. Leonard-Duran I
    4. Hagler-Hearns
    5. Arguello-Pryor I

Ps Arguello-Pryor II should easily make the top 20, easily.

Both are overrated in terms of action, because of boxing folklore.

Am I the only one who thinks Holyfield-Qawi should be inside the top ten?

No way should Cruz-McGuigan have one fight of the year over this. I have never seen two big guys fight at such a fast pace like that. A lot of lightweights fight at a slower pace. And to think it was only Holyfield's eleventh fight!
