:DI would have bet my money on Garcia, too!

Nah! Campillo would have been a brute of a problem for the young Cuban, but Garcia surely has the tools to beat him.

My point was and still is that Garcia shouldnt fight this kind of foe at this point of his career because such a fight doesnt make much sense.
Very high risk, very little reward! Why should he travel over to Spain to fight a Spanish based fighter with a proven track record on his home turf in Spain for a small fight purse?
Garcia is a young fellow with no big amateur experience. He for sure isnt the kind of fighter who needs to be rushed into big fights, dont you agree with me?

Odo you dont know what your speaking about mate.Garcia is a WORLD junior champion FFS.He was rated number one in Cuba at the time he defected
He has blown guys away that have good records he pleaded with Hyde in the past to be stepped up quickly,He would i feel not have blown your man away but would have beat him badly over the distance and claimed a huge scalp.

First of all it was in north spain in a town called Bilbao which is in the basque region...... if you dont know what that is i suggest you read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA#Social_support

They aint to hot on the spanish..

Because of that it would have effectively made Garcia the home town guy.

the judges were all not spanish i believe there was a brit a dane and im not sure the other guys nationality. Garcia would have got a very fair shake.

Garcia needed a test and Campillo would have provided him one...

Your forgetting he beat the current Olympic Silver Medalist :smoke

A major reason for Garcia's defection was the fact he got screwed over on polotics of the ams in cuba.

This fight was to be televised and this was the main event. Hyde had a 5 fight deal in spain all of the fights would have been televised.

I see Campillo is now fighting Hugo Hernan Garay for his WBA 175 title. According to Boxrec anyway, though I thought Garay was fighting David Gogiya.

    you said it
it was an opportunity for him to be the main man. In Ireland the people come to see Mike Perez hes the star. So seeing as Mike is out for a few months it would have been perfect for Luis to get some fans of his own in spain.

In a stunner, now former WBA light heavyweight champion Hugo Garay of Argentina (32-4, 17 KOs) was defeated last night by challenger Gabriel Campillo of Spain (18-2, 6 KOs) in Sunchales, Santa Fe, Argentina by majority decision. Garay came out very strong for the first six rounds of the fight throwing a large volume of punches and simply outworking the retreating Campillo for the most part. The southpaw Campillo was blocking a lot of the punches and moderately throwing some in return while circling from left to right. It appeared that it was Campillo’s strategy to tire Garay out and it appeared to work. From round seven on Campillo seemed like a different fighter as he became the aggressor and was snapping Garay’s head back on several occasions from his southpaw stance. Garay showed heart but tired down the stretch. In the end, the judges had it 115-114 and 114-113 for Campillo and 114-114.

I am very glad that Garcia read my posts here in this thread and pulled out of his scheduled encounter with Campillo:D

All the guys who thought that Garcia with just 5 pro fights under his belt would have been able to be victorious over Campillo on his home turf in Spain will now probably think twice before wanting Garcia being rushed into big fights.
The black Spanish based world title holder from Spain is a teak tough cookie who can give hell to a lot of fighters-especially to young rookies with just 5 outings int he paid ranks.

Nevertheless,I am still surprised that he was able to dethrone Garay in his backyard in Argentine.
Campillo is tough, a very akward fighter, but never thought that he would capture a world title.

Well done,Luis! Very good decision to cancel the Campillo fight!:good
