I have duran top 20-top 30 based on winning titles in four weight classes. haven't been too many guys to win titles in four different weight classes in our era.

losses to leoanrd, hagler, hearns, benitez, dejesus, and laing keep him from bing in my top 15. just can't see it.

add to the fact he only had 12 titles defenses all at 135 and never defended any belt he won above 147. now I realize that is not an easy thing to do when you are a lightweight but duran wasn't a special enough fighter to beat a champ at a higher wieght and then hold on and defend it.

if you have him in your top 5-15 your overrating him. if you have him top 20-30 then that is where he should be. an atg just not better then a leoanrd, hagler, hearns, roy jones jr, sweet pea or FMJ, just not on that level:hat

He had only 12 defenses? That's like tied for first or second in all time defenses at that weight! :patsch

i disagree with your placement but you've offered some really good reasons for it and have explained it, noting his pros and cons. the difference between that and most of the people arguing that duran is overrated is they have explaining or justification beyond the most basic superficial evidence from people who have NEVER seen duran fight. if you only watch leonard 1, 2, the hearns fight and benetiz and then try to argue his placement you should ****ing rot

Based on ability, head-to-head, longetivity, the fact he was majorly competitive against greats from 135 to 160, holds multiple titles and wins over guys like Buchanan, De Jesus, Cuevas - not to mention one of the greatest wins of all time over a certain Ray Leonard. If you're so definitive about having him at #23, perhaps you would care to list the twenty-two names ahead of him?

one thing that is puzzling to be nice and ****ing idiotic to be honest is how people are discounting the ray leonard win, one of the best of the decade. ray didn't throw the fight away, ray didn't almost win, ray didn't fight the wrong fight. duran won the fight, duran MADE ray fight his fight and duran on that night was better than any version of leonard that ever existed. The rematches were ****ing jokes and Leonard has said numerous times he planned it to fight a fat, unmotivated duran. And even THEN it was a close fight til the end. Anyone who says it was a beatdown from leonard has not seen the fight.

Anyway what's all this about Buchanan was robbed? Fair enough the end was controversial but Duran had outfought him in there.Buchanan won no more than 3 rounds.
