I hope you weren't offended by the joke I tried to make in anyway, it's honestly the first thing that just came to mind with this thread and I'm a real newbie when it comes to boxing so I don't know much about either McClellan or Monzon, I think I've seen two of Gerald's fights and one of Carlos'...

I'm not sure if he knocked Mickey out, I don't even know if the alleged sparring session happened because Monzon was I think in jail at the time(?). Rourke has also stated that he used to train at Dundee's gym as a kid and that he'd see Ali there, IMDb also says that he sparred with Luis Rodriguez and that he got a concussion in that one... I don't know if any of these are true. Rourke however remains the greatest actor of his time :)

The spar between monzon and rourke did happen, while monzon was locked up.Monzon dropped him with a jab straight off.

Despite reading probably everything there is available on him on the web, I've somehow managed to stay away from his boxing ventures, I think I've seen one of his fights and he isn't much a boxer whereas his acting talents are so great, it just pains me to see him "waste his time and talent" in boxing even though he doesn't see it that way...

Monzon however is a very interesting cat himself as well... the other day I was thinkin about boxers whose lives would make great films, like Raging Bull, and Monzon was one of them.

That's Josh Brolin who played Llewellyn Moss. I've never heard that one, sounds good to me :)

Monzon would bide his time and stop G-man in 10 rds.

Carlos was a better overall fighter and was a mean SOB too.

Actually, beating G-man would improve Monzon's record .....some say Carlos picked on WW's who had moved up.

I believe he's talking about Javier Bardem, the villain.

Monzon is long overdue for a biography and a film bio. It's ridiculous, but it's made Monzon into one of the most unknown, unknowable mysterious great champions of all boxing history. I think that until recently, with his bio and the natural attention paid to him before his death, Max Schmeling had that air of mystery..and sometimes I equate watching Monzon's fights on video with an old, blacka & white, grainy film of Max Schmeling for the similarity between the two, in regards to their relative inaccessability to the American fight fan. Far more familiar, and loved is Roberto Duran to American fans. There have been other non-American fighters as well since then, all lesser fighters than Monzon that have landed more acclaim and familiarity with the fans and the press in this country. Monzon, however, remains a mystery, and it wasn't helpful for him to have the cold, methodical style that he had, and the equally cold, arrogant personality that he had as well. SOMEBODY...an Argentine writer perhaps, ANYBODY...has got to come forward someday and pen Monzon's biography..and it would be a natural for a film bio..providing they found someone you could buy as playing Monzon....and as for Monzon vs McClellan..Monzon would stop him within 12 rounds.
