Chag had more head and waist movement than ten fighters. He had the right game plan, but it would take almost superhuman bobbing and weaving and coming forward, trying to land to get past Wlad's jab, hook and straight right.

Wlad does such a great job keeping them on the outside, and the stiff jab is causing them to constantly have to reset, as they are brokend down, that their attempts (like Chag's) to get inside just don't work.........try like hell, as he did. A fighter, even a very motivated one, can only take so many hard shots before he starts to wither from the effects.

Chag had *solved the puzzle* but wasn't able to employ the plan that will beat Wlad, well enough. He was still pressing forward as late as round 8 which I found very impressive, given the shots he was taking.

But I don't know of any fighters who could *employ the plan* well enough to beat Wlad. Just too big, skilled, and powerful, even if his opponent does use *the most likely plan to be successful*.

But constantly bobbiing, weaving, and pressing forward while throwing when inside..................that is the way to do it, if anyone can do it well enough. Doubtful, cause they get the hell beat out of them as they are trying. LOL

Most times, he bobbed and weaved when Wlad wasnt punching. I cant really remember him properly slipping a jab. He ate them all . And then bobbed and weaved after getting punched or before getting punched.

Good fight plan in theory but poor execution AND FOCUS.

I was most impressed by the foot movement of Wlad. He has gotten better and better at it. He kept circling left to neutralize the left hand of Chagaev. I always felt Wlad would exploit Chagaev's lack of a power right hand. Chagaev couldn't touch him. Then Wlad would snap the jab in his face and come with the big right hand. His use of the left extended is clinical. Additionally, he uses that 1/2 hook to move his opponent around and keep them occupied. He really knows all the tricks now which lewis was a master at too.

It's amazing how quick and fluid he is for a 6'6'' monster. His handspeed still amazes me too.

He has really come a long way in terms of ring generalship since the Brewster loss.

Sam Peter's gameplan is still the best imo. Pure aggression. You have to have an iron chin and will though. And you better have a ton of power and be in great shape. However, I think Wlad is far more relaxed and his movement is much more crisper than when he faced Peter not to mention his confidence level. Playing chess or boxing with Wlad is suicide...Slow death for guys with chins like Chagaev. Sultan was far more defensive, leaning on his back shoulder while making himself very low and only occasionally coming back with a flurry. Chagaev stood in the pocket with his high guard but Wlad was just too quick, smart and powerful for him.

It's gonna take a special effort to topple Wlad.

He was bobbing effectively at times, cause he caused Wlad's fast jab to miss quite a few times, mid rounds especially.

Chagaev put on one of the worst displays I have ever seen in a World title fight. He was awful!

Wladimir could and should have knocked him out inside the first 4 rounds.

Chagaev looked like a deer staring into headlights the way he ate jabs in that fight. I don't know what happen to the upper body movement or head movement he's shown in the past.

I think he just froze in the spotlight or a couple of those jabs shook him to his boots and had him thinking too much.

B.J. Flores commentating kept saying Chagaev should circle to his right when he was circling to the left.

but here's something I want to ask the board in general, esp. to KobeIsGod's note about Wlad's extended jab. I noticed that Wlad would stick it out there sometimes and leave it out there to act as a sort of barrier-- What about punching the arm, from a sideways stance? Try to hit the elbow or tricep at a 90˚-ish angle? It seems to me that the key to beating Wlad (before he gets old) is to take that damn left away.

What does anyone think this, sidestepping the jab and smashing the arm full-force? I think a leftie would be especially the man for the job as a left punch to an extended left arm would be more devastating. Maybe there's a reason fighters don't do that but it seems like it'd be effective on paper to disabling Wlad's left. Is it a legal punch? Or too hard to do, or...?

It's a shame that Chagaev rushed into this fight and blew his 0 and unbeaten mindset. Seems if his team had had time to study some film and work out an actual strategy - maybe my punch-the-left-arm idea is stupid/illegal/infeasible but something more than the 15 days he had gave him - he could've had a better go of it. Maybe if Chagaev had fought him when he was younger and could've done the bobbing/weaving more consistently and aggressively, or just maybe if he'd had more time to prepare a strategy, he might've done better.

But congrats to Wlad on the W and the Ring belt. He's looking pretty unbeatable these days vs. anyone I can see on the horizon.

I'm pretty sure a good fight plan would have involved throwing punches.

Chagaev's plan seemed to forget this important aspect of boxing.
    Here's Chagaev's plan:

    Show up.
    Stand still, slightly move head.
    Block jabs with face.
    Block right hands with face.
    Repeat as necessary.
    Collect pay cheque.

that's an interesting thought. from my understanding, it's legal as long as the glove is closed. however, sometimes wlad opens it up and uses it as backslap to move opponents around or push their heads down as well. I don't know about that stuff in terms of legality. He also uses as a range finder like Lennox who was a master of laying his hand on an opponent, kind of measuring his opponent, then coming down back with the right. Steward says Wlad has studied alot of Lennox in this respect and you can certainly see it show up.

that strategy you propose may be worth a try to deter wlad from doing it or breaking his rhythm but I think it would leave them wide open for wlad's quick right hand. I know marciano would hit guys arms to lower their guards but it would probably take a sustained effort.

Punching in the arm is VERY effective.
It's sort of like body punching. It pays off after a few rounds, but you have to commit to it.
I always said this would be the strategy to beat Wlad. Circle to his left and keep punching him in the arm. After 4 or 5 rounds, his jab will be gone. Circling to his left will keep you away from the right hand.
Of course, you'd need a semblance of good footwork to pull this off, which leaves out most of today's heavyweights.

    Exactly.

Unless his fight plan was standing in Wlad's range and absorbing a lot of punishment, I'm not even sure that he actually had a fight plan.

I knew those sneaky lead lefts that he tagged Valuev with would never penetrate Wlad's guard and range.

Frankly, I think Chagaev had a **** game plan, but at the end of the day, even the best game plan would have failed, as Chagaev is simply not in Wlad's class--something I said repeatedly before the fight, despite claims from many than Chagaev was a world class talent (he clearly isn't, and he never was).
