Most people are fans of a boxer first...And the "sport" itself comes 2nd...it should logically be the other way around...but it's not always the case.

And promoters know this...They need fighters with charisma...Today , you can't have any of that with the HW division...no wanna be thugs...no born comedians (a la Muhammad Ali)...just discreet foreigners...there's no buzz and no interest..

When the media has something to talk about...that's when things gets interesting for the sport. And that's also how you attract new fans...

Take the Haye vs Wladimir hype for example....David Haye perfectly understands this he even went as far as to create a t-shirt with decapitated klitschko heads..

Speaking for myself , i know that i wouldn't have as much interest in tennis as i hv today , if living legends such as Nadal & Federer wouldn't be part of the game. Because of them , my interest in tennis is at an all time high..

In conclusion , maybe one can't go without the other...But there are cases in which you'll have fans who just suddenly become interested in the sport , and then ignore it as soon as their fav fighter is out of the circuit...

For ex , in MMA , ever since Brock Lesnar was hired by Dana...most mma forums have been invaded with WWE fans (who usually talk **** about mma or simply don't follow or care to watch the sport). But since Lesnar is in the UFC , things are different now...

Well I started watching boxing when I was younger but my favourite boxer is De La Hoya, watched many fights before I even knew he was. Still love watching even though I don't want him to fight again.

The main reason I watched boxing was because of Morales. but thanks to undercards and hbo I've learned to appreciate other boxers as well. ESB has opened my eyes to even more pretty good fighters. Heck I even watched the klits fight on Sat. So I'd say that as I learn more and more I'm becoming a boxing fan instead of just a Morales fan.

So in other words, you are a fan of the sport. I also have favorite fighters that I will set time aside to not miss their fights and I have other fighters that if I miss the fight, so be it. What I took the question to be is whether you don't care about the health of the sport, as long as your fighter is going well, then the rest doesn't matter. Not whether you get up more for a fight with your favorite fighters in it.

The fighters who I thought had extraordinary skills were Ali, Jones, Sugar Leonard, Tyson, Duran, and Sal Sanchez. Say all 5 had a potential threat that they came to see fight ringside. I don't hope that the fights bomb, or that that 'potential threats' lose. I just watch the fight without rooting for either guy, and if he wins, he deserves a fight with my big 5. I'm a fan of the sport first and foremost.

I agree fully. I am a fan of the sport first and foremost.

    I got a top 5 or top 10 but I dont give a **** if they lose.
And some of them I actually WANT TO LOSE IF IT WILL BENEFIT THE SPORT in a BIG way . Like Jones Tarver 2

I'm a fan of the sports as a whole . . . I bash and trash even my favorite fighters and can pick their opponents to win if I knew they are gonna lose.

I've been a casual fan for a long time, only watching the mega fights (OLDH, Tyson etc). But I when their careers started going down I gradually lost interest.

I have to admit that watching Pac rekindled my interest in boxing (starting with the ledwaba fight). Since then I started to follow boxing as a whole more seriously.
