Even Ring Magazine's rankings panel didn't believe that Chagaev was one of the best two heavyweights in the world. The editor of The Ring took advantage of the short notice period before the fight to circumvent their own 'independent' rankings panel and declare the match for the Ring Championship after lobbying from the Klitschko camp. You think that displays credibility?

Wlad still hasnt fought the guy ranked 2nd in the world, i dont see how beating a guy [errounoussly] ranked 3rd makes him Champ! He is ducking the number 2. He will not be THE champ as long as Vitali is active. He will not become Undisputed champ unless he wins WBC belt which holds the true lineage from Lewis. He will not be champ until he beats the last [and undefeated] RING champion, Vitali Klitschko or until Vitali retires.

In my opinion there is a HUGE difference between "The Ring" championship and the "lineal" championship. Don't call me a hater, read another thread, I just called Wlad nothing short of almost impossible to beat by any heavyweight in the past 20 years. However, the flaw in this logic is that Vitali is still fighting and in my opinion still the "Lineal" champion.

I never heard that before and I would like to learn more about that. But even if its true, it really doesn't change that much. Outside of his brother, Wladimir is clearly head and shoulders the best heavyweight in the world.

Here was my rankings going into the fight

    1. Wlad
    2. Vitali
    3. Chagaev
    4. Valuev
    5. Povetkin

    After the fight

    1. Wlad
    2. Vitali
    3. Valuev
    4. Povetkin
    5. Chagaev

I think it is a very strong argument that Chagaev was the third best heavyweight in the world going into that fight. He was undefeated, he had never been knocked down, he defeated Valuev, and Povetkin has yet to breakthrough and win a title. Pretty hard to argue with him not being third.

Vitali is the closest you have b/c he went toe to toe with Lennox and Lennox retired as opposed to taking the rematch. Vitali has not lost since then so he's the closest anyone can claim to a linear champion.

Wlad needs to beat Vitali to be lineal. The title is still vacant. Wlad is the best heavy but he is not the true world champ yet.

Vitali was gone for four years and beat Peter, who lost to wlad in 2005. Vitali has nothing to do with being the lineal champion

Correct. Wlad beat the guys who have or had belts.

Wlad beat the IBF champ in Byrd.

Wlad beat the WBO champ in Ibragimov

Wlad beat the WBA champ in Chagaev.

Wlad beat Peter, who went on to win the WBC belt.

Essentially Wlad has won three of the belts in the ring, and beaten the 4th who had the other belt.

Wlad is the new lineal champion. There have been times in boxing before when the championship was vacant. In such times, two men meet to determine the new lineal champion. Wlad has bested the four other champions. He's the man.

Do you not know what lineal means ?

Its the man that beat the man, as lewis retired as champ his lineage ended.

For there to be a new lineal champ, someone needs to be rcognised as the undisputed champion of the world.

As there are currently 3 champs there is no champ.

    simples :good

HOw can you disagree with him being the Ring champ when he clearly is. That is ****ing funny as hell. Do you have your own Ring Magazine ratings you keep in a word file?

Ring Magazine has a set rule. They did not create one for this fight.

The rule says in the time of a vacant champion, A 1# vs a #2 or #3 will crown their new champion. Chagaev was the #3 guy long before Klitschko vs. Chagaev was announced.

Actually they don't have that set rule at all. What their rule actually says is that if there is a vacancy then number 1 vs number 2 will crown a new champion. They then state that 'in certain instances' a number 1 vs number 3 fight can crown a champion.

For instance, Margarito vs Mosley was number one vs number three in the Ring Rankings, but did not result in a new champion. On that occasion the matter was referred to the rankings panel where the consensus was that the title should not be at stake.

in no way, shape, or form is Wlad the lineal champ.

If his brother retires then we can talk. He just might become "Lineal by retirement."

I don't think many people are arguing with him being third. You just don't create a lineage by beating the third best fighter at your weightclass.
