Yes but not right after winning the title. If I was managing Bowe, and I could make a quick 30 million for fighting the three stooges, before fighting Godzilla, I would have done the same thing. Every champion does it. How many fighters make it to this pinnacle after training and boxing their entire life, and you have one shot to maximize your income. I cant blame Bowe, and like I said Lewis' own circumstances may have prevented the meeting down the road, when he was fighting his way back after getting KO'd by Mcall, who I might add was supposed to be one of those three stooges that Lewis felt he would have an easy night against.

I agree with Lefthook. Bowe would have beaten Lewis if they met around 93-94. Bowe was a better fighter then and Lewis's game wasn't complete. Lewis' wins prime v prime though, IMO.

    Lewis wins

Bowe was scared of lewis, there was a bowe fight where lewis was doing comentary and lewis stood in bowes face and told him he was going to knock him out.

What was bowes response "i thought we were cool"

Lewis response "im going to knock you out"

with that bowe walked away and lewi renamed him chicken bowe

Its on you tube ill try and find its hilarious, make no mistake bowe feared lewis don't just blame newman for the fight not happening bowe never wanted to face lewis and i wonder why :think]

    :rofl

There's a number of problems with this "theory" One is that Bowe was to my knowledge legally obligated to fight Lewis. So it wasn't a case of gee I won the title who should I fight now, situation.

Secondly, I find it hard to believe from a financial aspect he made more money going down the path he did, than if he would have fought Lewis.

Not only do I doubt he didn't make as much money, I also think it tarnished his marketability severely. It make the heavyweight champ appear to be a coward for gods sake how much worse can you market yourself?

How can Lewis be blamed for anything when it was agreed in writing that the winner of himself and Ruddock would be fighting the winner of Holyfield, Bowe. ?

'Well schooled' means having an open defense and not knowing how to get past a jab? Lewis may have been defensively incomplete pre-Steward but he was at least as defensively competant as Bowe and being the faster bigger puncher he's likely to land first and land deadlest. Plus Lewis's jabs in itself gives Bowe nightmares

As for Bowe beating Holyfield, well if he took the same shots from Lewis that Holyfield hit him with he likely wouldn't still be standing

Bowe lost one fight. If his game had that many holes in it, he would have lost more, but wait your going to say he fought nobodies right?

You could look at it that way or that he would still have two titles, could make two easy defense and then fight Lewis if Lewis became more of a marketable fighter in America. Bowe was American he didnt need to go to England to fight Lewis for his title. At that time, HBO was broadcasting his fights in England, he barely filled the front room at MSG when he fought in America.

Lewis would win, by unanimous 12 round decision, in my opinion.

Well where were the fights with the top fighters from his era - Lewis, Mercer, Rudduck, Morrison, Bruno, McCall, Moorer????? Even Old Holmes or Old Foreman? Holyfield and Golota aside he fought dross and fringe contenders

Most had him losing to Tubbs and the Golota fights were everything but losses

    Lewis wins any time frame.

    Ask Razor Ruddock.

Bowe was slow and made a career of beating up small guys.

Bowe never came up against someone like Lewis back in his prime. Somebody just as big as him who had a knockout punch in either hand.

Bowe's biggest weakness was that he had no defense, which caused fighters of the Biggs variety to repeatedly land on him. I feel Lewis still had more than enough in the arsena in '92, he destroyed Ruddock around that time who was practically more dangerous than anybody Bowe fought in his prime bar Holyfield.

Bowe is one of my favourite fighters, but to beat Lewis you need to somehow avoid his right hand. Bowe could not do that.

    Agreed.

Lewis beats Bowe just like he did in the Olympics. The main difference in professional sport is that body shots will actually count in the scoring.

Lewis wins--multiply what Golota did to him by ten then you will see the beating he would get. I remember Bowe dropping the belt in the trash....had they fought Lewis would have been a bigger star. Bowe ducking him was a crime to the sport.
