Why use 4 oz gloves on the bag instead of 16 or 12oz?

Someone at my gym said that it was not to damage the bigger gloves, but he wasn't sure. Sounded kind of peculier to me, considering a bag is softer than pads or some's face/body.

    Any idea why?

I prefer lighter gloves on the bag, mine are about 8 or 10 oz. Not sure why, I hate using sparring gloves on the bag.

I've used 4 oz's for over a year without giving it much thought, but recently i like using sparring gloves on them. With the smaller gloves i get a bit lazy or complacent in keeping one hand home, or a high guard in general. 8 or 10 oz would be a nice compromise, though.

Maybe he wants to damage his hands, or else he must be feather fisted.

If you are a boxer there is no logical reason and you will in my opinion be doing more harm both physically and also in terms of ring craft.

Distancing is one of themost important elements of boxing... if you practice your bag work in 4oz gloves you are going to need to be closer to the bag to hit it... if you step into a ring with your distancing based on using 4oz gloves you are going to be losing at least a couple inches of reach and that could result in you getting your head jabbed off.

Hands... Boxers are obviously plaqued by band hands. Look at Calzaghe... he pulled out of about 10 fights in total due to his hands, had multiple surgeries, had months and months off and for the last 2-3 years has to basically use pillows for gloves. I myself have had to have 6 weeks off and even then been in agony because of a broken hand... Even now it hurts at time... (I hit someone in the head with MMA - 4oz gloves on).

HOWEVER... If you do Self Defence, MMA or Traditional Martial Arts
I'd say use them. It is important for these disciplines or sports that you condition your hands and again get used to the distance... if you practice TMA stuff or MMA stuff in boxing gloves it'll mess you up.

    10s for the bag/pads , generally.

I use 16s and 10s...........16s are old sparring gloves.

10s do feel like nothing when u compete.

Though thats generally when you are used to using old 16s on bag/pads etc.

4s actually seem like 10s right now, nothing.

Cant say its good or bad, though i can say its "not what i ever seen"

May as well use ya taped hands as is done too.

4s, aint worth pulling them on.

Some good words, regarding losing distance regarding the size of gloves, i do see ya point, IF you work of the end of your gloves.

Personally, i try to remind myself its my hands and not the over bloated hands ( gloves ) i am using.

Its easy to rely on the "extra wadding" and yes its enough.

Gloves protect the hands and the opponents face and also give you a false security of extra "reach"

Depends on the person i guess

Back to your post....i certainly agree, 4s are of no use regarding hand condition etc.

I think it is pretty pointless training in a glove that is lighter then the glove you will fight in. I always use 12oz on a bag and started to use the 16oz. When you put the 10oz gloves on to fight they should feel really light. I suppose you do what feels best for you..

    I use 14oz for bag.

Just the thought of hitting the heavybag with 4oz gloves on makes my hands hurt.
