Could Harry Greb upset Joe Louis?

What type of chance would Greb have?

    Zero? Please elaborate.

Greb was at times heavier than the Conn who fought Louis. Greb was very fast, had an iron chin, and had some crowding type of tactics that might bother Louis. Louis had trouble with quick boxer types on more than one occasion.

Indeed, Louis said his weakness was people who crowded him. Louis felt he needed room and leverage to get his shots off.

He said this after Marciano defeated him. Primed Louis was an astonishing counter-puncher that struggled to bait fighters into him...Greb would be darting in over and over again throughout the fight, Louis would find him and time him. Greb's momentum plus Louis's best punches = total disaster for Greb.

Unanswerable. We just don't know enough about how Greb actually operated. We know he was incredibly effective, even against much bigger opponents, with not overwhelming power. However, for the impressive resume, I don't think anyone can accurately say how Greb accomplished what he did.

Gosh Mendoza, I know you hate the fighters from the 40s-50s, but i never thought you would stoop this low to critisize Louis(and marciano in the lastarza thread)...its puzzling. Why don't you just get back to doing your "ALL TIME GREAT" Super Southpaw Tourney LMAO

Louis KO 1 Greb. greb never fought a heavyweight puncher, let alone the greatest puncher who ever lived. Grebs style was great against boxers, but i feel a come forward 165lb swarmer like him would be made in order for Louis.

Louis feasted on small fighters who came into him....it was the fast small boxers who fought on the back foot that gave him trouble

ps Anyone who doesnt have joe louis in there top 5 heavyweights of all time is living in a fantasy dream world.

I think Greb would have troubled him but could not have lasted the distance ... he had trouble with Kid Norfalk who hit no where nearly as hard as Louis ...

If Dempsey didn't destroy Greb as everyone's saying Louis would casually do, the **** makes anyone think Louis blows him out?

Beats him, sure. But Conn damn near lasted the difference and wasn't as durable as Greb, nor as fast and Conn would have gone the distance if his balls weren't the largest part of his body.

Also, Dempsey was a more explosive and faster puncher then Louis, and even by LHW and MW standards Greb was ungodly fast, the fastest several ATG's had ever seen.

    1. It was Sparring

    2. Louis was better than Jack Dempsey

Huh? If there was anything that greb doesnt have against Louis that Conn does have, its footspeed. Conn was a swift master boxer who used his very fast footspeed to box in circles and stay out of range of louis artillery. Conn's fast feet is why he was so succesful against Louis. Greb did not fight this way...Greb swarmed right into his opponents, he did not stick and move like conn did. Greb will walk right into louis, and no 165lb man can walk into louis...Conn walked into louis for the first time in the fight in round 13....He got knocked out. Greb's style was not stick and move. He will be live bait for Joe Louis.

Unfortunetly its Greb "Big Balls" which are going to cost him the fight. Greb is going to try to trade leather with Joe, and he will get knocked out badly. Sorry Harry, but stick to your own weight class.

LOL this could not be further from the truth. Louis had devastating early knockouts at his very best, and some of his best 1 round knockouts came against great fighters or # 1 rated contenders....Dempsey has just one top knockout in round one vs a top contender(fulton)...Louis has multiple.

As for speed, I think its clear with a neutral eye that Louis handspeed were faster than Dempsey's. Louis combinations were put together more often, more nicely, and generated greater power than dempseys. Louis scored one punch knockouts/knockdowns over Durable world class fighters that have never been down before...Dempsey on film did not score one punch knockouts, dempsey needed a no neutral corner rule and MULTIPLE punch after punch before finally putting a man away.

I am sure you maded this strong claim by the indisputable evidence we have seen of Harry on film right? Sensationalism in the Boxing Newspapers in the 1920s was so extreme, it ought to have been a fairy tale.

Greb would get Battered...Greb was a rugged Middle who beat lightheavys but Louis had too many guns for Greb and Greb none for Louis....It would not last long

I think Harry Greb would fear great against a 180lb boxer like Bob Pastor...Great matchup for Greb. But Harry does not matchup well with Louis...Louis was a boxer puncher but had SLUGGER TOOLS AND SLUGGER INSTINCTS....ATG swarmers dont match up well vs ATG sluggers

"It was sparring" is a very poor excuse considering Dempsey's routinely broke sparring partners bones. He did NOT coast or go easy on his sparring partners.

Dempsey was embarrassed to the point where a legitmate fight was never going to be made.
