Learn proper punching technique and form from your coach.

Its a problem usually found at the route of the messaging chain, tightening of the muscles around the 4 and 5th upper vertabrae. Stops the messages getting a proper response to the neurons firing patterns. always found the stick routine a big help, helps the elbows to understand where they should be to operate correctly.

After reading this, I think hyperextension might be my problem after sparring my first 2 rounds... missing punches sure sucks the life out of me I noticed. Not having impact when expecting it made it real obvious to me that my elbows didn't like it.

Most likely you hyperextended your elbows shadow boxing.

Something I certainly deal with at times. Sometimes strain and other times hyper-extending.

When it's really bothering me, I wear an elbow brace that you can set how far your arm will extend out so you don't make the same mistake. The brace is not fun to wear, but...it works.

Boxing against the BOB leaves me more vulnerable because the head flexes back too easily, not giving a solid surface to hit and easier to hyper-extend. Hitting sturdy surfaces are much nicer on my elbows.
