Jimmy Wilde , Was he just a Slugger or could he Box ? from what ive read of the Mighty Atom i have always been under the impression he could do both with equal effect and would be very intrested in hearing other fight fans opinions on this subject .
Don't be sorry its your opinion :good Btw news of another Wilde fight that should be on Film somewhere if its not lost by now , the Dyson fight was filmed , Jimmy wanted $1,000 ( Chancing his arm ) but settled for $500 .
Some entrepeneur Jimmy Wilde wasn't he?! Maybe i'll look stupid and it will show him putting on a boxing clinic!! I don't think he was a swarmer or anything like that, though i do think he was a fighter more so than a boxer.
A fighter ? early days yes in the booth days however he learned early that despite being out weighed heavily the more he took his future father in laws advive ( A mountain fighter of regard himself ) the easier it was to overcome the weight difference by boxing the heavier man , it may be or may be not recognised but Wilde had a reputed 800 fights in his career , ok so 600 odd were in Skeretts booths but i would imagine you learn that you need to box as well a bang on occasions .and yes Jimmy was quiet the sharpe when it come to earning money , he was Welsh after all . lol
Yeah i'm aware of the amount of fights that potentially took place wiyh him in them. And what you say seems logical yes, but from my readings and some footage seen, i don't see any evidence supporting him switching to boxing enough throughout his career for us to label him a boxer on the level of what his capabilities as a fighter were at. The man was a freak of nature through and through and yes it's astonishing for me to claim he would engage in/initiate close quarters combat with the bulk of his competition (considering he would be a 105 pound fighter today no doubt), but that's what i'm saying. The man was unique considering his natural size.
Teeto Who knows for sure ? i agree but i lean towards him having a vast knowledge of the sweet science after what I have read about him from scribes both sides of the Atlanic and from what ive read from the man himself in "Fighting Was My Buisiness " also adding to that what ive read from Driscoll whilst he disscussed Jimmy , Who knows for sure indeed ? im sure there are plenty out there who have studied this Wee fella a whole heap more in depth than i have and its their comments im courting here as part of My education .
Yes that sits well with me also , Jimmy often through shear size difference alone had to fight counter just to survive . i didn't know until today when he fought Herman he was a full Stone and 8lbs lighter than his opponent . ok he got beaten in the end but it went 17 rounds , Herman in later life went totaly blind .
No when i say he's a slugger i mean his main intention was to be a ko artist, i still stand by this. I said to you before he 'was not a swarmer or anything', and said to Janitor the other day in another thread that 'he had some bounce about him'. I'm not discrediting the man, i just think that unless we are really splitting hairs, the man more of a fighter/ko artist than a boxer. I really do think we would be splitting hairs in the grand scheme of his massive career if we were to say he was ever a pure boxer.
Well actaully i wasnt refering to your comments re him beinga slugger however i understand what you are saying in respect to him having Ko on his mind from the off , it would certainy appear that way to a certain extent but i for one see a little passed that when opponents size or ability warranted caution .
