I have always struggled in my own head to decide which one of these great fighters should be higher on an ATG list.

I like both as fighters & change my mind constantly.

Classic opinions would be helpful on this one, cheers.

Arguello for me. He's a guaranteed top 30 imo, Hagler is probably right off of that.

Alexis has the better resume imo, and maintained dominance through 3 divisions.

I agree with what you say I just think Hagler was a little bit of a better fighter.

Hagler did absolutely nothing in a P4P sense. Arguello absolutely excelled there.

Wouldn't really argue with it. Of course, Arguello at his 130lbs best was a very special fighter himself. I think it's easier to split their accomplishments than their ability.

I guess it depends on how you scored the Hagler-Leonard fight. I personally have Hagler winning by 1 point. So basically, he holds wins on the other Fabulous Four (Hearns, Duran and Leonard). Which is definitely one hell of an achievement.
P4P, I give him the edge.

Historically, Hagler is easy top 5. Arguello top 25

Could be the way AA was percieved after the Pryor fights and the fact that Hagler was never stopped nor dropped or how he was robbed in his exit fight.

Personally, I didnt care for the way Fernandez performed in his winning effort. it was the worst case of running i ever saw and believe he should have been deducted points.

I scored the fight for Leonard but I still dont know between Hagler & Arguello because one fight cant take away his previous career or the skills he showed before that fight.... same with Arguello & Pryor.

Hagler is a more complete better fighter overall with less weaknesses, in terms of achievement its quite close but Hagler has better wins for me

    Ability - Hagler.

    Career - Arguello.

    Overall - Arguello.

There is not a sizeable gap between the two in any of those three categories though.

    IMO, Hagler was more complete.
Had an Iron chin, Was able to switch and be = as effective from both sides.
Aggression was there, Good power, Great stamina & condition, workrate. (15rds)

Love AA aswell, But those Pryor "L's" defo drop him a notch.
Can't lose either way, 2 of my all-time favs.

Bill, I dont know if you remember and I dont ever see anyone else on this forum making reference to it but I'm recalling Ring magazines 1999 p4p poll conducted by the fans themselves.

This is the most reliable poll I have ever seen conducted where you have a wide variety of opinions instead of a group of men in the same fraternity influenced by peer pressure.

These were all opinions independent of each other. I of course HAD to participate.

I was very pleased over the outcome especially when it came to the unmatchable Roy Jones who in the poll of current fighters, won just about every catagory imaginable. Roy is vastly underrated and I suspect is due to his being disliked

I dont have the issue on me right now but I remember that Hagler was ranked 4th. Duran third, Ali second and Robinson first.

Cant remember the order of the others but i know Sam langford was in top 10, Benny Leonard, JC Chavez, Willie Pep and I think Louis and possibly Greb.

Ray Leonard was nowhere to be found thank goodness, except in the most overrated category where he came in third
