If you include heart, courage, dedication, humility, and class in your measurement of greatness, then Alexis Arguello was the greatest prize fighter in history. International Boxing Hall of Fame member "El Flaco Explosivo" was the very definition of the term "boxing legacy." The man was poetry in motion, graceful, powerful, athletic, a Champion among champions. However, his early career gave us no hint that an all time great fighter was on the rise. He was in his 16th outing before he fought an opponent who actually had a win on his record, and Alexis still managed to lose 2 of his first 15 fights. Beginning with his 16th bout Arguello started knocking out everything in sight. Known mostly as a scrawny slugger, his first title shot came at 126 against Ernesto Marcel. Alexis lost. A few fights later Arguello stopped future hall of fame member Ruben Olivares in the 13th round, and for the first time we saw that he might have something more than just heavy hands. Alexis Arguello would go on to beat Royal Kobayashi, Alfredo Escalera X 2, Rafael "Bazooka" Limon, Bobby Chacon, Ruben Castillo, Rolanda Navarette, Cornelius Boza Edwards, Jose Luis Ramariz, Jim Watt, Ray Mancinni, Andy Gannigan, Kevin Rooney, and Billy Costello, among others. Arguello went 16-3 in world titlie fights, and fought a total of 14 current, former, or future world champions. The finest gentleman to ever grace a prize ring Alexis "El Flaco Explosivo" Arguello was my #1 all time favorite fighter. Good Night Champ! whomever said they saw him in a pr lobby.. well.. Arguello had returned Sunday from Puerto Rico, where he honored the late baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. His death prompted Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega to announced he was canceling a trip to Panama for the inauguration of President-elect Ricardo Martinelli.
The word "Great" is thrown about a lot these days, but this man truly was great. A three division champion when titles still meant something. Its a shame that he never got that match agaisnt Duran, because he could have won. Rest In Peace, warrior.
