    :good

I agree with everything on your post.

Ali is the best Ive seen of all the fighters with their entire career (or most of it) & Duran & Leonard are 2nd & 3rd for me, the order changes regularly.

I also agree about the footage of SRR, Pep & Hank showing enough in their style in the footage we do have to support the opinions of their earlier yrs that werent caught on tape.
I also dont have the Langford`s & Greb`s on my lists for the same reasons.

Anywhere between 3-8 is generally a fair rating for Duran IMO.

The Barclay fight was mind bending, who else could have stayed up after that shot he took from Barclay in the 8th, HEART,HEART kept him up as Clancy said & pile on 2 drop the "Blade" in the 11th, truly incredible, to quote Clancy again after the knockdown "WATCH THE SURGEON AT WORK":thumbsup

I watched the 1st fight again with my son this evening, ****in breathtaking standard of boxing, 2 ov the best at their peaks, i just went 4 the Barclay fight as it just seemed mission impossible but as usual Duran is Duran as they say, you'll never find another like him & who else brings the house down when he's introduced anywhere, NO ONE:cool:

Crushed about Alexis, met him 20 years ago in Vegas when i went 2 the 3rd leonard fight, what a fantastic champ & human being, i've a great pic taken with him in the Sands with me mates the night before the fight but i can't find a way 2 load up pic's on here:fire

I rate him 15 to 20. He is great but his level of competition at lightweight was mediocre and he never beat a real great in the 1980's and dominated them. Yeah he beat Ray, but Ray came back and Duran quit. Then Duran lost to all the greats. You can a have a video of him beating guys who are not great, but if you show a video of him fighting the best guys he ever fought, then he lost. I think he is great, but overrating a fighter because he had charisma and great personality is not really fair.

How was that a great victory? Barkley lost to Benn a year later in one round. He lost to Nunn and Toney and Maske. The Barkley and Moore wins for Duran were overrated. Moore had 11 fights and had dental surgery days before, and Iran was an inside fighter which Duran excelled at. Duran could not have beaten any of the other middleweights of the time like Hearns or Tate or Nunn. Barkley's style suited him. Barkley is not a great fighter. I like Iran. He is Hall of Fame, but not great.

Who are you to say who is a true boxing fan? I have been watching boxing for 25 years and put up numerous sites and go to hall of fame dinners and you are saying someone isn't a true fan if they do not believe what you do about Duran? I think because I am a true fan I rate people by what they accomplished and I am honest. He was great, but it has to be because of his lightweight reign and beating Ray. But Ray was inexperienced and fought the wrong fight with Duran. How can I say he fought the wrong fight? Well when Ray boxed and used his speed he outclassed Duran, and right before Duran was going to get knocked out Duran quit. And watch round 8. Ray was starting to land head and body shot more clean. That quitting had to do with Ray landing and not stomach cramps. As for Duran at lightweight, Dejesus was the closest to being good but not that great. Dejesus lost to Cervantes who lost to both Pryor and Benitez, and Benitez outclassed Duran. Knowing boxing I do not follow tradition beliefs if they do not make sense. I just cannot accept Duran being top 10 with his record. He lost to all the greats in the 1980s. All of them. Outclassed by Hearns and Benitez, quit with Ray. Lost to Hagler. So what makes him great? His lightweight reign? That is not enough to put him better than anyone ever was. What does it? Go down the list and tell me how Duran's wins at lightweight were better than say Holmes at heavyweight.

That doesn't make Duran great to take that punch from Iran. Nunn was not hit with that punch at all in 12 rounds. Benn stopped Iran in one round. The Barkley fight cannot be accepted by Duran fans as proof he is great, unless you accept the Hearns fight 5 years before and Duran being knocked out by Hearns. Or the Benitez fight 7 years before the Barkley fight when Duran was outclassed for 15 rounds. You cannot have it both ways. Accept his wins and say he is great and ignore his losses and say they were flukes. Selective reasoning.

This comment here is why Duran is overrated. His fans say this was the greatest victory yet if Nunn outboxes Iran for 12 rounds or Benn knocks him out in one, then those fights mean nothing? Why? Because Duran was older? That does not make it great. Means he fought well at 38 years old against a guy who was not a great fighter and who was made for Duran's inside style. Nunn vs. Duran in 1989 would have been 12 rounds of complete unanimous win for Nunn. Nunn would have won every round and maybe stopped Duran late. Don't get me wrong. I love Iran Barkley. But I also have to be honest that he lost to many guys he should have beaten. To prove the Hearns fight was not a good style matchup he should have beaten Nunn and Benn.

Im sorry Manos...Im a very big Duran fan but you are the one losing credibility by making that win into something its not.

Very very good win all things considered...but one of the alltime greats? Nah...Roberto already did that against Leonard.

I have to agree with Mag here. Top 15-20 is great ranking.

Being a NYC native, Davey Moore was pure hype..albeit that was a superb win for Duran who electrified the garden as the visiting fighter. Barkley for me w/o the Hearns win wouldnt even smell the HOF and Ive always rooted for NY fighters

I would count the win against Cuevas as higher than those two.

The fact is besides De Jesus, I would argue that there was no elite fighter at LW during Durans reign.

He defeated three great fighters, De Jesus, Leonard and Cuevas if you want to sum up his career.

His win against Leonard though was one of the greatest win in boxing, he was just perfect that night and fought with such focused rage. This I think was what elevated him to such lofty grounds

Id put Kenny B over that version of Pipino chimba...he is another elite Duran beat.

As is Ernesto Marcel and you could argue Kobayashi aswell, though he was a tad past it. Depending what you classify elite Palomino and Villa could be considered up there aswell. Villa was a very good figther, he just ran into a wonderkid in Benitez and a prime Duran.

I think Davey wasnt all hype...Excellent amatuer and he had a lot of promise. He record was not manufactured at all, far better then just about anyone you will see with 12 fights to there name.
But he wasnt ready for Roberto..he probably would have never been but a poor corner and a borderline inept ref help ruin what could have been a decent career.

I stayed off that other thread. I can get plenty pissed off on ESB without walking into something on purpose!
