While probably a level below the aforementioned, I watched Craig Peterson-Jimmy Thunder I last night and enjoyed it, kept an eye out for myself in the crowd but the cameraman didn't bother with the cheap seats. Saw some awesome mullets though. Seen all of the above except for Michael-Carter, pretty sure I have it though so will have a look sometime this week. Cafaro-Trotter II was pretty good also.
The Michael/Carter is on the DVD I sent a while back. The same disc with Michael/Ropis.... CHB burnt a dozen copies.
Mate, its a full time job keeping track of what I've got, let alone where I got them from. I keep sending 'em out, they keep coming in. All good.
Was fortunate to be there for Ellis v Michael and it was certainly a great bout, and a real event for Melbourne. Big build-up, a ring war, plus the aftermath. Only had cheap to mid priced seats. But an uninterupted view except for perhaps a couple too many beers. Can still remember the blonde ring card girl, even her name - memories!! ...only reason I personally put the 'Earthquake' Carter fight ahead of this one was the 'flair' of Carter, plus of course he could whack too, and the contrast in styles. IMO if Lester had have been able to use his reach and the ring more, and Michael was hellbent on not letting him, it would have made that fight a greater spectacle. But hey, in terms of wars, it certainly was totally unrelenting!
Used to enjoy watching Jimmy - so unpredictable - couldn't afford to blink or it might be over. Haven't see either of his fights with Petersen, and they were both in Melbourne too. Always get a chuckle looking at the crowd at the 70's & 80's bouts. On the Barry Michael disc there's some high powered mullets, and it's hard to believe the teenage kids jumping around in the background are now mid 40's plus - geez life races by!
PM me your address CHB, I have a 5 disc 13 fight collection of Thunders if your interested. The second Petersen fight was in NZ...for the Australian Heavyweight Title!
I love the words CHB. Absolutely priceless. Typically, had we seen Tunney/Dempsey II, LaMotta/Robinson Valentines Day Massacre, Frazier/Ali I or the Thrilla, had there been some ***** in skimpy attire holding the Round Cards, her name would impact (and her arse) in our minds as much as the fights. Keefy was often using Miss Nude Australia in his promotions. Sadly, I cant tell you which promotions. I did see her at Festival Hall a few times.
'In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade....' Went to the Simon & Garfunkel concert at the Melbourne Tennis Centre last thursday - brilliant stuff! ...as good as when we saw them in 1983 at AFL Park? Perhaps not vocally, though the venue was imeasurably better. ...Absolutely awesome nostalgia.
Les Darcy book launch and Jack Stitt's boxing collection which includes Darcy gloves etc. This content is protected http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/money/planning/packing-a-punch/2009/06/29/1246127475331.html
What a fascinating story. Especially regarding the Little old lady who gave Jack the so-called Darcy gloves. I wonder if this little old lady also gave Jack the 'George Barnes Empire Title Belt' he so proudly displays... sometimes!!
Just a breif report in referance to Sam Langfords honouring by the Aust. Boxing HOF. As Langford was inducted into The Oz HOF in 2004, the duration of time had been spent seeking out family of Langford, in order to present a trophy to them honouring the great mans involvement in Australian Boxing over the course of two years, 1911- 1913. During his stay, Sam engaged in 10 bouts and winning all and claiming the Australian H/W title from Sam McVey in the process. A boxing exhibition with Aboriginal Jerry Jerome also took place as well as Langfords protege, Dave Depena becoming the first international oponent of the 17 y/o Les Darcy. Suffice to say Depena failed dramatically. With American Mr. Clay Moyle working on the manuscrpt for his book, "Sam Langford, Boxings Greatest Uncrowned Champion", contact was made with Australian boxing historian Mr. Arnold Thomas. Via the connection of the two, Mr.Thomas was able to contact the Great grand daughter of Sam Langford, Mrs. Carol Doyle with the news and hopes of meeting for the presentation directly. During this years annual USA Boxing HOF in Canastota, both Clay Moyle and Arnold Thomas were fortunate in meeting Mrs. Doyle for the first time and organise the appropriate grounds inwhich to make the presentatio of the Langford award. Ironically, Mrs. Doyle made it clear that the presentation should be made away from the farcical Canastota money spinner. Arnold Thomas states that Mrs. Dolye looked at him with emotional genuinity and said; "I don't want the presentation here, I would like this to be between Australia and the Langford family and friends" As it was, the presentation was frequented by Arnold Thomas, Clay Moyle, Dave Allen and Mike Smith (Smith and Allen both respected boxing historians from England), and immediate family and friends of the Langford troupe. In accepting the Trophy on the family behalf, Mrs. Doyle made it clear that the family stories, of her Grand Parents stay in Australia, had been her greatest childhood memory. Whilst sitting on her Grand Mothers bed, Sams wife, the stories would be told to her every Saturday night. Mrs. Langford would continually suggest the time in Oz a very special time in her life, her fondest memory in fact. In reference to Clay Moyles book, with Clay present, Mrs. Doyle announced that chapter 15 stood out the most, as that chapter is dedicated to the time in Australia. For Thomas, Moyle and the Langford desciples a special event took place. Needless to say, in honouring Sam Langford on Australias behalf, the greatest repects were returned to Australia by Mrs. Doyle. Footage of this presentation will be veiwed at this years HOF dinner at the MCG, Oct 10th.
Hey LEON, Petersen vs Thunder I is bloody awesome! Starts a bit slowly. But from memory it's about R7 where Petersen gives Jimmy the worst case of leather poisoning I've ever seen (mostly straight punches through the middle of Jimmy's guard). Then the following round Jimmy goes within a whisker of tagging Petersen's big toe....stirring stuff!
