Has quitting on the stool become more common or acceptable in recent years?

Because it doesn't mean anything. If the fighter is taking a pummeling yes he should stay on the stool.

There are some cases when indeed it's quiting and it's shocking(recently Jesus Chavez shocked me when he quit with Katsidis).

 

I think a fighters cornermen are more willing to do it now than ever before.

 

I wonder if it's an extension of the ultra early stoppage phenomenon going around.

 

imo....i think a puncher shouldn't quit from getting out punched ans a boxer shouldnt quit from getting out boxed.

 

I think it is becoming more acceptable. And in a way, I'm glad it is.

But it can be taken too far. There are fighters in the past I wish quit on their stool instead of absorbing the beating they did. But there are others (like Ortiz, for example) who just gave up far too easily. That I don't like.

 

That's exactly how I feel.

I had no interest in seeing Oscar come out for any more against Pacquiao, but there was something that seemed very wrong with Ortiz's reaction against Maidana.

Then again, people said the same thing about Izzy after Marquez I.

 

The phrase "live to fight another day" is older than modern boxing fans' thirst for blood and definitely older than internet warriors, who call everyone a quitter who don't go out on a stretcher, but seriously fail when it's about paying for the ticket or getting down to the gym and have a taste of WTF might going on inside the ring.

The only thing became more common in recent years is the whining of undereducatated, overweight keyboard gangsta wannabes who know nothing about our sport and have no respect toward athletes.

 

I think when fans just want to talk about the guy who quit, it's because they want to take credit away from the guy who won.

I've seen very few cases where a fighter just gives up when he's not really hurt, but just frustrated... VERY FEW.

Who the **** are we to judge sitting watching a TV or sitting in the stands. You don't know how bad they are hurt.

 

i'm with you both and I think this is how the majority of fans feel. If a fighter just can't take any more ****, fair enough.

But to the topic, yes it's much more acceptable. you wouldn't have seen something like kosta quitting in the 80s or earlier without a true beating. Quitting on the stool was acceptable but only if a dude is really taking it. Now people like ****ing Guerrero quit if they don't think they can win a fight or if they weigh the pros and cons and feel the win isn't worth it.

True but it's hard when guys like Kosta, Guerrero or even Frietas haven't taken that much damage at all. Their spirits were crushed, in the case of the first two cause they thought they would dominate and didn't. Guys are quitting now when they have to dig a little deep.
