I watched a documentary a long time ago about the Benn vs Eubank rivalry and remember it being mentioned that no matter who won the second fight, Don King became both fighters promoter. As we all know the fight ended in a draw and King was effectively screwed over by Barry Hearn, because the contract didn't state anything about the fighters joining him if the result was a draw. The documentary then wound up as if it was a success story that the bad guy (King) failed in gaining control of the two fighters and everything was all rosy. However, today I received the Benn vs Wharton programme and guess who is promoting the fight, King! This fight was just after the second fight with Eubank, so how did he get to promoting alongside Frank Warren with both fighters (Eubank's next fight was also advertised in the programme and was co-promoted by Warren and King) so soon? Any help to clear this up for me would be nice :good
It's on YouTube. I would provide a link, but I can't because I am on my iPod (won't allow me to copy and paste).
benn was mildly owned by king for a while, Nunn was in the u.k. at the time promoting himself to get the winner. it's a pretty interesting chain of events.
Yeah apparently this is true. May possibly explain the fact that Eubank got away with the draw for this one. I've seen this fight many times and every time I give it to Benn by close decision even with the point deduction.
Something like this was mentioned in 'Dark Trade'. Eubank knew the money was with Warren (who was in partnership with King) so he went with them. King/Warren also promoted Eubank-Close II.
King has always owned the HWs just now hes recedin he still owns the WBA. he had a lotta fingers in a lotta pies, so to speak
