Non-noobs should be familiar enough with my posts to know I don't post bull**** and resourceful enough to copy and paste an excerpt into a Google search for original sources.

Just read HBO's article which touched on how this development would leave Pavlik without any significant opponents at 160-168. Maybe it paves the way for a showdown against PTP. :think Regardless I applaud Showtime for their creativeness should they pull this off.

Yep. Boxing has worked like this since when? I just don't see it happening. It is hard enough to make one fight at a time, let alone a tourny the way things go now days.

this will never happen. A round robin with points system? That's some dumb sounding ****. Just like lightweight lightning wasn't a tournament, this is bogus. Showtime should focus on making a couple big fights and go from there. Planning ahead like this will only lead to letdowns.

It's a better publicity tool than you may realize. Employers hire agencies to scout prospective applicants by checking out their FB pages. When you're looking at membership in the quintuple digits in support of something like this, it's hard to sneeze at if you're a TV exec.

It makes perfect sense given how much Showtime's invested in the SMW division; all this would do is guarantee the fights they would've wanted to show anyways. Hopefully it all comes off as planned, as this league concept could really help change the way fights are scheduled if it's successful. The beauty of the concept is that they wouldn't even need fighters of this caliber in order for it to be entertaining; it would work in about any weight class where there's a logjam of contenders who need to sort themselves out.

Showtime calls no shots in the boxing world. They don't have much of a budget. Yet, now they are going to dictate the future of all of these guys for the next couple years? lol.

TV is TV. Promoters generally like to put their fighters on TV. Showtime is about as good as it gets, next to HBO or HBO PPV (Showtime is certainly a couple steps above generic low-production PPVs like Top Rank or Latin Fury.)

Also, tournaments excite people (obviously - look at this thread). Tournaments net ratings. A lot more people tuned into the C-&andB- fighter SMW tournament on Showtime than would have ordinarily tuned in to any random one-off or even doubleheader featuring the exact same names.

Sounds wonderful, nice to hear. Lemme just go tuck this away in my "No F'n WAY!" files right next to Lennox vs. Vitali II.

so it would be like for example 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and nothing for a lose? in a league format then the top guys going through to a straight knockout semi-final then final, its like the footballs champions league and would get massive interest in places like the UK

i tell ya what, this is what boxing has been crying out for, this would truly be a shot in arm for the sport, can't see it happening though, its too good to be true and how would showtime afford it?

every division needs this, but unless some boxing loving billionaire comes along can't see how they can pull it of, too many conflicting interests and if they somehow find the money knowing this great but testing sport something will ruin it

    fantastic idea though

Promoters like to make money. They could care less what the source is. JCC Chavez makes more on Latin Fury PPVS than he would make headlining on Showtime. Nate Campbell was scheduled to make $400k vs Guzman in 08. A unified beltholder at 135. That's it. HBO has way more than twice the number of subscribers as Showtime. No way in hell many of these guys commit to fight into 2011 on Showtime and ruling themselves out of potential bigger paydays.

And what about venue? Taylor going to Germany? :rofl You really believe that one? How big a pay check do they have to promise him for that? And purses? Are they agreeing to 50/50 up front? You think anyone wants to split 50/50 with Ward or Dirrell at this point? You are basically talking about a whole new set of rules to make these fights happen. What happens if a guy gets beat badly in his first match? His drawing power goes down. He may not want to continue. What if AA decides he is better off at MW milking his title after all?
