Jeff Chandler Discussion!

I agree that he seems a bit underrated. Orlando Canizales gets a lot more play around, and although I'm a big fan of his too, I think Chandler would've beaten him. He dominated Canizales brother. Orlando was a step up from Gaby, but I still think Chandler would've taken him. I'd like Chandler to edge Pintor also in a fight that should've happened. I just think Chandler's height/reach gives both these guys problems. Other than Jofre, Olivares, and Zarate I think Chandler rates favorably against most 118's in the last 40 or so years.

He was a good, solid champion, but not quite great IMO. The loss to Sandoval exposed a lot of his limitations. I always thought Pintor was the better titlist at that weight, but they both needed a fight against each other for their legacies.

 

Champ for 4 straight years. Not bad. jeff's comp became more demanding over time as his struggle with Canizales would suggest for anyone who saw it as well as the non title fight with Muniz. The Sandoval fight was sheer hell tha ended his career and one of the most memorable performances in the last 40 years

 

Exactly what were his limitations? because i really couldnt spot much in the previous defenses. He was sensational in the Carter fight. I just think his competition became very demanding and he couldnt fend off the challengers anymore. I think he was declining.

 

Chandler and Fenech declined faster than anyone i have ever seen. Overnight pretty much. Pryor too in his own way. You could see Chandler wasn't the same human being as he'd been vs Gaby just a year prior. His performance vs Canizales was superb, and it was no great surprise to see Gaby beat Sandoval. He actually beat him badly. IMO this simply showed how suddenly woeful Chandler was more than a styles thing. Experts were amazed that he just laid around not punching, it was wierd.

 

JT1 or anybody. My recollection (which is shaky) was that Chandler's rapid decline was attibutable to drug use. Anybody have a little more info on that? History would suggest that a prime Chandler would've handled Sandoval clearly.

 

p.s. What I'm getting at is that I don't believe the Sandoval fight is a true indicator of this guy's skills. Check out his fights against Lujan, Solis, Murata I & II, Canizales, Johnny Carter. Chandler had a lot of very good efforts.

 

I 110% agree. Chandler was shyte, and for the most part didn't even punch :blood

I believe he would have smashed him 2 years earlier.

 

Yeah, as good as Richie was, Jeff would've cleaned his clock a couple of years earlier.

 

Joltin' Jeff got inducted into Canastota over a dozen years ago, while Pintor's still on the outside looking in. I suspect Chandler's somewhat overlooked today because he got his IBHOF ring and honors so long ago, but he got full credit for a pithy reign. Murata drew with both he and Pintor in title shots, but then Jeff stopped Murata twice and retired him. Lujan, Julian Solis twice, Gaby Canizales, personal crosstown rival Dancing Machine Carter, Oscar Muniz by stoppage in a title rematch...Jeff was a guy who didn't seem to duck anybody, and it would've been interesting to see how he would have continued if not for the abruptly weird end (reminiscent of how Gushiken's career suddenly concluded).

 

I wonder how bad off was his drug problem, that could explain the loss to Oscar Muniz also.
