I knew you were going to correct that because you're such a stickler. His friend said he was 179. So his friend was off 1 pound. The sick story, however, true.

How can Walcotts chin be average when he faced the 3rd largest group of heavyweight punchers out of any heavyweight champion in history, and was only knocked out twice from 1944-1952 by ATGs Louis and Marciano after many rounds.

Walcott took punches off the most ferocious punchers of the decade like Hatchetman Sheppard, Elmer Ray, Tommy Gomez, Lee Q Murray, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Lorenzo Pack, and Rex Layne.

Walcott was Ko'd by Al Ettore in 1936, then was stopped by Abe Simon in 1940 ( a lot of people say he gave that one to the boys) but then he went on to have a good win streak and Walcott went in against some excellent punchers and his chin showed no defects...these are some of the guys he beat. Lorenzo Pack,Joe Baksi, Curtis"Hactchet Man" Sheppard, LeeQ Murry, Jimmy Bivins, Lee Oma,Tommy Gomez,Elmer Ray,Hein Ten Hoff, Ezzard Charles, he lost Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano by Ko but was robbed in 1 fight with Louis.....I did not detect a bad chin in there...did you?

Ya I mean taking punches from the likes of Hatchetman Sheppard, Tommy Gomez, Lorenzo Pack, Elmer Ray, Lee Q Murray, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, and Rex Layne doesnt amount to much right? :patsch

Most of these men were in the Rings Top 100 punchers of all time list. Pontius one time made a thread, and outside of Lewis and Ali, walcott faced the most group of heavyweight punchers in history...so walcott was VERY proven against heavyweight punchers.

If you want to point to his 1930s losses...take note some of these losses were body punches or exhaustion knockout losses from lack of food, typoid fever, and training like the Ettore and Simon losses. Walcott was nowhere near his best pre 1940.

post 1940 walcott fought an incredible list of punchers and only louis and marciano stopped him...and it took them MANY rounds.

Walcott could take a punch but the reason he was not knocked out against some of the punchers he fought probably had more to do with his defense and footwork than his ability to absorb punishment. Great fighters like Louis and Marciano were simply able to get around his defense, in various ways (Louis by well-timed counter punching, Marciano by simply never giving in).

He did seem to take Marciano's best for 13 rounds, even laughing off some of his shots, until Rocky landed perhaps the best knockout punch in boxing history.

Louis' KO of Walcott was also more about his amazing finishing skills than Walcott's chin. Few could have taken those combinations.

I agree completely with the thread starter's point of view. For example look at Chris Arreola's picture in SuzieQ's avatar and then compare it to how he looks like now. Does anyone think those extra 20+ pounds are doing him any good?

Simon loss was due to exhaustion, Ettore loss was a body shot knockout.....Walcott was fighting in the 1930s with typoid fever, taking fights on 24 hr notice with no training and no food. Think of Jack Dempsey in the mid teens.

Henry Hatchetman Sheppard, Elmer Ray, Lee Q murray, Tommy Gomez were some of the most ferocious punchers who ever lived. Walcott went 6-1 against these devastating punchers. Even in the Louis and Marciano fights, walcott took some big punches without going down and it took them 11 and 13 rounds to put walcott away.

Hatchetman Sheppard and Tommy Gomez have been described by opponents as having "frightening" power.

    Philadelphia Evening Ledger :

WALCOTT STOPPED BY ETTORE'S BODY ATTACK IN EIGHTH

Al Ettore is resting on the laurels of his sixth straight victory today
A relentless right-hand body smashing attack turned what started out to be a tough battle for the West Philadelphian into an eight-round knockout against Jersey Joe Walcott, Merchantville, who came into neighborhood reknown with a raft of knockout victories, at the Camden Convention Hall last night.

Three thousand fans paying more than $2,500. went into a frenzy as Walcott virtually punched Ettore off his feet in the opening of the scheduled ten heats. However, Albie rushed in close thereafter and pummeled Walcott so viciously that the Negro was ready to quit in the fifth.

Walcott then gave everything he had in the sixth, the only other frame in which he showed to advantage by staggering Ettore with a right uppercut and again with a left hook. Then Ettore's body bombardment again had Jersey Joe flinching in the seventh.

Walcott backed against the ropes after 1 minute and 8 seconds of the eighth, going down against the ropes under a right to the pit of the stomach. He almost rolled out of the ring while Referee Jim Manley counted "ten."- Chuck Hasson

I see no mention of a knockout blow to the head

You can also get KO'ed by body punches as well.

Ettore had 20 KO's in his 83 bouts. Walcott weighed 188½ for that bout, 5 pounds more then he ever weigh for a bout.

Walcott was not stopped by some of the big punchers is because he was a Great defensive boxer. He would dance, roll to one side then the other.

    Bingo :happy

And Suzie Q really knows his Walcott stuff. I remember hearing how he was one of his favorites. Great fun fighter to watch. Slightly under appreciated I'd say.

A lot of people thought that Roy Jones Jr. had a great chin. Why, because he was never caught, the same goes for Walcott, he was very hard to catch or hit solidly.

How does his chin fare against Louis'? I suppose you have a fair theory. But I've seen Joe take a lot of shots from Rocky and Louis. Maybe his recuperative powers weren't tremendous but I don't say he has a bad chin. I also don't say he has a great chin, but it is good.

Most boxing historians rate Wacott and Louis's chin fair, which is average.

Lowry also had Marciano badly staggered at least twice, not to split hairs ... he did not just go the difference, he lost one decision many felt he deserved ...
