:huhTough one again.Assuming Tszyu didn't exist rather than Hatton not fighting him, then I'd still say losing to who he has is better than winning the Lonsdale.Without Tszyu,he wouldn't have that defining win but he still would have gained recogniton as the best in that division between 05-09-and won world titles like he did do anyway outside of Tszyu. In a way,if he hadn't beaten Tszyu and didn't have his reputation, his efforts vs Floyd would be seen as even more valiant

:goodObviously I agree with that but Gaz is saying choose between being a world title contender or an outright British champ. Obviously if it were between being a linear world champ V British title this would be a pretty one sided poll!

Lonsdale belt. You have got something tangible at your home, the belt. You know what your level was and you can be proud of it.

Losing world title challenger means jack **** these days. The fact you can even challenge for a belt without winning the Lonsdale belt tells you everything you need to know about the ranking bodies and their belts. Plus you lost anyway...meh.

Give me a losing shot at one of the big 4 world titles anyday of the week as opposed to walking around with a Lonsdale belt outright.

I would much rather be remembered as a fighter like Gary Jacobs who fought the best fighter of his generation in Pernell Whittaker rather than a guy with valuable piece of belt that the grandchildren will auction off when I am long gone.

I hate the 'traditional' route everyone on these shores seem to be so obsessed with nowadays, its obsolete.
**** winning area, british, commonwealth, & european title wins before you are ready for a world title shot, thts simple living in the past right there.
Boxing has changed, & the old way of doing things isnt the right way anymore.

If man can get a world title shot by a different route? Best of luck to him. & if he loses? he will always be morre remembered than a Lonsdale belt holder nowadays.
I suppose its all down to HOW you lose in a world title fight as opposed to being a Lonsdale belt holder outright.

I mean, if I was to be offered a deal that I would be KO'd in a world title fight or be a Lonsdale belt holder? I would choose the latter.

Its all ifs & buts I suppose, a tough question to answer by any stretch of the imagination.

lol you almost did a 180 turn there Dunky, read it back to yourself

Lonsdale for me... for a start off you have to actually earn it

I'd be SO proud to say I was the British Champion and won the belt outright. That's a great thing to be able to say.

It would mean more than being manouevred to a title shot and losing.

    That's just my gut feeling.

The McCall victory or not, Frank Bruno was always going to go down in British history a lot better than say a Horace Notice or Julius Francis; it really does depend:

I remember Howard Winstone more for his bouts with Saldivar than winning a Lonsdale bout.

But I remember Skelton more the domestic performances that won him his Lonsdale belt, than losing to Chagaev.....

I'll be seeing my dad next week, I'll ask him. Don't know if he'll be able to pick one over the other.
When my dad was fighting you more or less had to be British champion to get a world title shot so imo opinion the belt held more prestige because the best British fighters were fighting for it. The notches on my dad's belt are John Caldwell, world bantam claimant, Walter McGowan, world flyweight champ and Evan Armstrong who went on to win the Lonsdale belt at featherweight. He had 2 notches on a second belt over Johnny Clark who went on to win the British and European titles after my dad retired and was on the verge of fighting Rafael Herrera for the WBC title when forced to retire due to a detatched retina. I think John would of had a good chace against Herrera.
I think the British title route should be taken, think of all the fights we've missed out on over the years. Hatton vs Witter for one and Bruno vs Gary Mason. If it wasn't for all the split titles we have now the Benn, Watson, Eubank fights would of been for the Lonsdale belt therefore keeping it's prestige and remember Herol Graham was still on the scene so there is no guarantee that any of them could of won it.
I'm not trying to put down the belt holders of today by the way particularly Jaime Moore who has taken the British title route and proved himself the best in Britain.
