It's a cherished thing in our family, like you say because of what he had to do to win it. Everyone remembers my dad for his world title fights but on the other hand when he goes to boxing functions he still gets asked to bring the Lonsdale belt with him. There's someting about, those who know boxing want to see it and be photographed with it. Here's one in the avatar of my youngest with his grandad's belt. The shorts he's wearing are the shorts my dad wore in the Harada fight.
LOL!! Cute. I think a lot of the charm of the belt is its classic timeless quality. The design of the belt is pretty much unchanged from the one that people remember seeing in boxing books around Henry Coopers, Howard Winstones, Randy Turpins etc waist.
wow, your Dads career is amazing it really is. Caldwell and McGowen there amazing names and Johnny Clark I agree with you thought the British title route needs to be used more the best IMO Olivares is my number 1 Bantam and Rose on his day is second only to Olivares from what i have seen your dad must have been a skinny guy or your kid is huge, them shorts fit a treat
fantastic post mate. i think the british title and more so the lonsdale belt is so underated by a lot of british fighters, and people on here, it gets my back up. being a ex amature, and haveing trained with a good few pro's at domestic level in the early 90's,you could see the hunger, and there faces light up when ever british title was mentioned.if i was any good i would of defo wanted a lonsdale and knowing i was the best in britain, before going onto world title fights it only seems to be boxers who have a lot of money poured into them(yes frank warren boxers being some)who bypass this pretigous belt nowadays,i suppose its just cos theres agood chance of them losing to a tough domestic british fighter than some unbeaten obscure eastern block fighter who hasent fought outside outamongolia:deal
Lonsdale Belt! Would mean i had won something, a major title rather than challenging unsuccesfully and not actually won anything.
No it's not, it's going as far in your career as you can. If you have to skip lesser achievements on the way, so be it.
Was Ali the champ at that point? Damn haha. I thought it was really early in his career for some reason.
sorry to break this to you but copper fought Ali twice. I know the concept is hard to take. just messing he ofught Ali early in Alis career then he got a rematch when Ali was champ at highbury
