Flea it is a tough match but thats the defining factor for me you done your list yet because im guessing you got a bit of Ortiz i could trade for
Awkward one this, at 1st i thought Laguna 2 pip a 72 Duran but the confliction here is that Duran blew (The Boxer) Buchanan's defence apart with an all out rough'n'ready barroom style assault (I think it goes without saying that Buchanan most seriously underestimated/dismissed what was in front ov him that night) by the 2nd De Jesus fight you could see the controlled pressure box/fighter evolving & I think Laguna would have been overwhelmed & dispached in the later rounds by a 74 version ov Duran. Too defeat a Prime lightweight Duran i'd think you'd have 2 have pre-war a pep/sadler/armstrong crossbreed, modern era would be a cross between pea/viriut/de jesus failing that a gun with a full clip & a prayer:smoke
The young, swarming Duran was more fit to take out the pure boxers IMO. While the more reserved, but also more calculated and skilled Duran of the late 70's was more fit to handle the other styles, as he'd really rounded his style out by that point. I think even at that stage, though he opted to pick his spots and box against the likes of De Jesus in their third encounter, that he was still capable of applying the pressure full stop. He showed this immediately when he moved up against the bigger, bull strong, durable Palomino. And I don't think I even need to mention his performance against Leonard. The more I think about it, the more I think Duran was capable of beating just about anyone his size.
I bet you guys are shocked i haven't hauled my Duran obsessive ass in here yet? (or no?) Anyway, i think he can beat Laguna, a Laguna that isn't wanting to co-operate can be a pain in the ass for sure, but i think at distance, Duran's superb closing the distance skills (aka smash your face in with a right hand you never saw coming) is of use here, and then everything that comes with it. Possibly late on in the fight Laguna starts to ship a bit of a beating, and inside i don't believe he has the game to match Duran, which is precisely why he wouldn't willingly 'co-operate' there. He does have a nice classy left hook counter though. Still Duran for me. On Duran-Ortiz. I rate Ortiz very kindly, i have even conversed with Sweet Pea about a possible outpointing of Whittaker, and while i don't think he agreed, he didn't rule it out, due to the 'completeness' of the Puerto Rican's stylistic make-up. It's interesting that Ortiz might be the only lightweight in history who i think has a better chance of going at it with Duran at close quarters rather than attempting to outbox him, and considering Ortiz can do both arguably equally as well, that is saying something. The body work done here would be brutal, and great, Duran's for the skill level, and Ortiz for the relentlessness. Duran on points for me, though i have no objection either way, i believe Duran is faster off the mark and wins an outright war of attrition.
Yeah i think Duran has tendencies towards scouse culture, what a real man!! Nar okay, care to comment on my post? (the one about the thread topic)
