I think most people know Tyson didn't train for this fight and there's much evidence to show it. Not just how lethargic he looked in the ring but other eye witness accounts from people that were training him and knew him. But my question is about his weight. Tyson at his best weighed in between 215-220 at his best. He came in the fight at 220. So how did he make that weight?
I think it's a myth that he didn't train for that fight. Undoubtedly he didn't train as WELL as he did with Rooney, with those clowns Jay Bright and Aaron Snowell running his corner, but he certainly trained some. Hell, Greg Page knocked him down in sparring, I believe, in the lead-up to that fight. His lifestyle had an impact certainly, but the lack of a quality trainer is what hurt him the most.
Yeah i'd agree with that....it wasn't that he wasnt physically right...more in his head he wasn't and his corner weren't the same class to help him prepare. And Tyson never knew how to adapt in the ring....he had one way of fighting and if it didnt work he was stuffed. I think Douglas got a good rhythm going and his jab and footwork were right on the money that night. He had Tyson right were he wanted him - on the end of his jab and kept dropping right hands over the top and upper cuts when he came in. Tyson wasn't really there that night....once Douglas got his rhythm and from that a great deal of confidence...Tysons myth was burst. Then after that he crumbled. I really dont think that Tyson was out of physical shape at all - his weight proves that really. His head wasn't right and he didnt know how to adapt. Boxing is more mental than anything else. And once you get hit a lot of times and start feeling it a weak heart will practically give up. This is the very thing that made Evander great - his grit and determination - mentally he was always very strong. Physically he got in great shape and the two together made him what he was. Remember most fighter are persuaded mentally that they are gonna get beat before it happens. They get worn down and lose hope. Then you know what usally always follows.
Of course he trained, and he trained hard. LOOK at him. But if you lose intensity in training, you lose your edge in the ring.
He just didn't seem to be interested in fighting that nite. His body language said it all. Plus, I think he was having marital problems at the time with Givens, plus other distractions as well.
Other distractions including the big, unafraid, technically competent fighter kicking the crap out of him?
If you havent checked out the Tyson documentary..then you're missing out...He goes into detail on why he lost the fight with Douglas...he says that he let the fame get to him while sleeping with different women and not training like he was suppose to. Somehting else that might strike you as well is that Tyson fought Berbick with a STD. The way he did Berbick kinda makes sense now...He (tyson) fought like he had a chip on his sholder the way he torched Berbick.:good If you havent seen the documentary..you're missing out!
Yeah but doing things half ass will have an effect on any fighter, even one who is strong mentally because your not at your full potential and not giving your all for a fight. As far as him being out of physical shape, I heard Kevin Rooney say that Tyson dehydrated hiself to make that weight, and regardless of what anybody says he looked very lethargic in that fight. He even got tired real quick. So basically he was just going thru the motions and it showed. Hell, even if you didn't see the fight, the punchstat numbers porved that. At his best he was throwing between 44-46 punches a round but in that fight he was only throwing 16-20 punches a round. AS for him not being in shape, all the guys who trained him said he wasn't training like he should of, his limo driver even said it. But it definetly was mental and physical a combination of both. And anybody is gonna be mentally not there if there not putting there all in training, look how much better De La Hoya looked against Hopkins cmpared to the Felix Sturm fight. He wasn't mentally there because he didn't put his all in training and that's why he looked lethargic in that fight.
Obviously he trained. But without motivation you just get in shape and not in fighting shape. He was in good shape at 39 too, just not fighting shape.
You don't like Tyson very much, I see it in all your posts. That's cool. I feel the same way about Lennox the overated Lewis.
Through the first six rounds he averaged over 20 punches. Why so few? Well either like you say, he was in such bad shape that he couldn't even throw more for the first half of the fight, or, more likely, he was having his head jabbed off. Through round 4 Douglas through just under 120 jabs. HALF of them landed. If our are outreached, your punch stats are going to be low because you are not getting close enough often enough. Which was the case. Basically your argument is off base for two reasons 1 - Even a fighter that doesn't train has decent punch output in the beginning of the fight. 2 - Tyson isn't close enough to be busy Even his limo driver, huh? Jim Lampley: "Tyson is in great shape at 220lbs". John Johnson: "You don't take a whipping like that for 10 rounds and not be in great shape physically." I agree with him. You asked a question at the out - "how did Tyson get down to 220lbs if he didn't train?" What is your answer?
This a bit of a last grab, isn't it? You are right. I don't like Mike Tyson. I love him. I grew up with his fights. I have them all. I watch them often. What I don't like is the apologism and the bull**** that has grown up around him as his legend has aged. That is a joke. All this crap about "didn't train"...Vegas stopped taking bets on this fight. Vegas had the inside line on the fight because they always do. Mike trained fine. I don't think he trained with maximum intensity. This **** started about him "not having trained" started when Don King started, that disgraceful pefromance after the fight. Here are some threads i've started on Mike where I show my love, so we can bite this "hater" bull**** card in the bud once and for all: Pictures of Mike: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96180&highlight=mike+tyson Here is my Mike Tyson appreciation thread, one of only three appreciation threads i've started on the forum: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110607&highlight=mike+tyson I'm always trying to dig up new footage of Mike and when I find something I haven't seen before I share it with the forum: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116969&highlight=mike+tyson So your special read on "all my posts" might be off just a bit :good I'm interested in the truth. Whether it's a fighter I like or not.
