Exactly, because he looked like **** from the opening the round, till round he got knocked out. And it was merely because he didn't doing anything remotely close to what he's capable of. And if Tyson looked like that against his previous opponents prior to Douglas, he would of gotten the same treatment because Tucker, Thomas, Tubbs, Spinks, Holmes(even the 38yr. old version) were all better than Douglas.
I agree, its just too bad Tyson he didn't get to do what Louis did to Schmeling, IMO Douglas wouldn't have had the drive to show up in shape he became content, while Tyson would've been out for blood.
Tillis was a developmet fight for him and he was going thru the motions in that fight too. But at least he still trained for it. And tucker got beat easy by Tyson on the scorecards. The fight wasn't even close. Now a good fight were Tyson was at his best with a fighter who had good footwork was the tyrell biggs fight, who had a similiar style to Ali and he had good footwork and a good jab when he used it and you see the difference when Tyson uses all his skills, a big difference.
Tyson was a great fighter at his best a top 10 ATG at HW but a good mover could give him problems, and don't ever compare Biggs to Ali. Tyson underestimated Douglas and took a beating for it, lets just leave it at that.
Rooney says that he went on a crash diet for the Douglas fight, that's how he got that low in weight because he was originally 20Ibs. heavier for the fight.
In terms of talent you can make a comparison, obviously not accomplishments because he met a beast named Tyson who took everything out of him in the fight and was shot to pieces after, the same way Meldrick Taylor was after the Chavez fight. Infact, Tyson ruined a lot of the fighters in the 80's when he got threw with them.
Every fighter at that time trained hard for Tyson because he was the most exciting fighter at the time and reward out weighed the risk because losing to him wouldn't been any shame in it. It was the way Tyson beat them, that gets overlooked.
IMO Tyson simply came into this fight thinking Buster was a push over...an EASY WIN.... and he paid for it
According to the book Bad Intentions by Peter Heller, Tyson wasn't eating that much going into the fight, something like a bowl of soup a day or some ****. Don't know how true that is. Tokyo wasn't representative of Tyson at his best but Douglas fought really well regardless. He took advantage of the few weaknesses/vulnerabilities that Tyson had shown before that fight.
Excuses-Excuses, Tyson got his ass kicked because Douglas was the better fighter that night period:deal.. You all gonna make excuses for Tyson losing to holy 2x:huh, getting his ass almost killed against Lewis?? while your at it make an excuse for Mike getting KO'D by Kevin Mcbride- and Danny Williams...:-(
That and he was already showing signs of not wanting to fight anymore...hence getting rid of Rooney. Plus he just destroyed carl Williams so he thought he was somewhat invincible...at least he didnt think Douglas would be much of a match. No excuse for losing this fight.....he was what? 22 or 23? Then again...maybe there is an excuse. An in-shape, motivated and well trained Douglas turned out to have great savy, endurance, speed, great jab, constantly feinted....gave angles, and punished Tyson when he missed. You know...you got a prelude to this if you go back and watch Tysons fight with Quick Tillis. Tillis gave him some fits...and showed what a well moving heavyweight with a good jab and chin could do to Tyson. Tyson was overrated!
atsch yeah Tyson was close to his prime after 20 yrs in the sport, McBride and Williams were just better......:rofl:rofl:rofl
I agree Tyson would always have trouble with fighters who were tall and had a good jab - but at his best, he had the stamina to hang in there and beat them. Tony Tucker and James "Bonecrusher" Smith are no worse than Douglas, Tucker arguably better, and while each of them frustrated Tyson, they lost. Tyson at his best could overcome adversity. When he began to slip, even ever so slightly, he became beatable.
