Honestly Wlad lost to Sanders because he totally underestimated Sanders. Words right from Wlads mouth "I underestimated Cory. He knocked me down and I said to myself WHAT!!, you cant do that to me, I am the champ". :deal He really thought it was going to be an easy fight. He was DEAD wrong and because of that fight, Wlad will NEVER underestimate an opponent again
The only way possible to be a much taller, fighter with a hard to penetrate left hand. Its not rocket science. You gotta get inside, or else you are toast. And get inside pretty quickly, or else, once again, you are toast. I think someone to beat Wlad must have fast head and waist movement and a constant come forward movement/pressure..............Good upperbody and head movement is a must in order to bore your way inside as you dodge his jab......then you must have alot of power to put him down, once you do get inside. A good chin to withstand his jabs that do hit home, is also a must. Chagaev had the right idea; the ONLY idea, really. Its just that he wasn't good enough at it, nor does he have enough power to put Wlad down, once inside. As someone else said......Tyson's style was the way to beat Wlad. But there is noone who can execute that plan good enough. And I am not even sure a young TYson, himself, would have been able to penetrate Wlad's size, power, and skill. Tyson couldn't even deal with Holy's jab and skill, and Holy has NOwhere near the power of Wlad, nor is he even close to being the size of Wlad.
Two opponents simply endured terrible beatings until Klitschko hit the wall, while the other one was a large man himself, with extremely fast hands and a good KO wallop, not to mention the fact the dude was a southpaw. I thought in Vlad's last fight that Chagaev might have just stayed in there and manage to catch a tiring Klitschko as he hit the wall following the Brewster-Purrity method. Chag showed an exceptional toughness in taking punishment and he didn't appear to have any quit in him. Then it occured to me that there probably wouldn't be a Brewster-Purrity finish because the older and wiser Klitschko had the ring savvy to pace himself better.
You need a HW that can nullify Wlad's height and reach huge advantages. If Thompson were a little younger and had more power he'd have had a real chance with Wlad. The problem is there really aren't any other prime 6'4 and bigger HW's that are any good that can take some shots and return fire. We'll see if Haye's combo of great handspeed, good power, and decent height is enough but probably not. But with Wlad's style and determination smaller Hw's have very little shot (unless your almost as powerful and skilled as a prime Tyson -- not likely). Wlad's a very good athlete with a cautious and very effective style and because he is so huge he's very tough, but you cannot overlook his size as one of the main things that makes him soo effective. Again IMO the fact that Thompson, who was no world beater and was a little older, could give Wlad some very tough rounds shows that once we get some other big tough good athlete boxers Wlad won't be so dominant. I just don't know if that's gonna happen before Wlad is ready to retire.
Vlad has way too many skills for the heavyweights at this time. It's not just Vlad's size, it's his skills. As far as the Sanders fight, Vlad was not prepared. I wrote all about it here, German Forum, to Klaus Peter Kohl and so many others, "before" the fight. Corrie was preparing to fight Valouev in South Africa. Corrie was in the best shape of his career. (I had followed Corrie's career for years, he was called the Sniper for good reason) I knew that. Vlad had done a great job of outboxing McCline at McCline's prime, to have Sanders was a let-down. Vlad would have beaten Corrie in a rematch, but Corrie refused to fight him, that is a fact. Whatever, it is not important now. A fighter learns from his losses. The haters are grasping at straws, if, could have, or past fighters who would beat Vlad, etc.
He is 33 and can fight 'til he is 40, but anyone can lose a fight, can have a bad night. Vlad trains, stays in shape, has great trainer. Vlad has great skills.
Of course his skill and style are important, but you truly are nuts if you don't think size is one of the most important ingredients in making him unbeatable lately (against B level opposition).
The only person Wald has faught who had very good skills was Bryd...other than that no one else has the kind of skills that fighters in the lower divisions have. It's just not that deep or rich in terms of skills in the HW divsion. Bryd was undersized and although he was skilled he lacked any fire power in the HW divison. But I do agree that someone who is EQUAL in size and with POWER who is also aggressive and not gun shy could beat the Kilts as well. But there aren't that many of those running round the HW division either. Bottom line someone with skills who has got some POP would be the one to dethrone the Klits......and of course a solid beard if their "D" isn't up to snuff would be ideal.
