This thread is designed for difficulty and thought. With luck I might pick up a thing or two on the below fighters. If you had to pick among the following fighters on any type of greatest fighters list and could only pick three who would they be and why? -Manny Pacquiao -Emile Griffith -Salvador Sanchez -Pernell Whittaker -Roy Jones -Bernard Hopkins -Floyd Mayweather -Julio Cesar Chavez - Aaron Pyror
Pernell Roy Griffith Whats the criteria exactly though..who you considered the highest p4p out of those fighters, or who is your favorite?
The only condition is you can only pick three of the list. Try not to pick favorites. Griffith is an interesting call. He lost a lot in his prime, but he also beat some quality fighters. I add my three in later.
Hopkins - He might not be to everyone's tastes but to me dominating your division for so long deserves respect. Moving up 2 weight divisions to win the Ring title and then beating the Ring Middleweight Champion in his early 40's also prove that he was something special. Chavez - I don't think he was as good as people believe but, once again, his achievments speak for themselves. Jones Jr - Not really my third choice which would have been Sanchez. However, with Sanchez dying tragically young we are left with too many questions about him. He might have been a bright star for a few years and then had a high profile demise but we'll never know... Jones dominated a division for years and then went on to win a segment of the Heavyweight title. O.k, questions will always be asked about the level of opposition and fights that didn't happen and people will always suspect, quite rightly in my opinion, that Ruiz was taylor made for him and he would have got battered by Lewis but he still made history. Mayweather and Pacquiao may, when their careers are over, replace 2 of the above.
He had an excellent career though..the fact he dropped the ball a couple of times says more about his quality of opposition then it does about him. His resume is about as deep as you will see..as he really took on just about all the best fighters of his era and beat a hell of a lot of them. As for my other choices... Pea is one of the best fighters I have seen period. Certainly one of the best pure boxers and defensive specialist..and perhaps has the best jab of any fighter I have seen. Plus he has the career to back it up and is a lock for top20 alltime IMO. Roy is also one of the best fighters I have seen...very few if any beat this guy at his best 160-168. Out of all of them Pea would be only one there who I would consider a favorite...I think he is the greatest out of all you mentioned, with Griffith IMO the next greatest on that list. Roy probably doesnt have their resume..Id probably have him just behind guys like Sanchez, Chavez and Pac alltime..But H2H he is probably the better figther, probably the best outside of Pea on that list.
not in any order i would pick ,hopkins learned his trade and became a very clever fighter who worked his opponents out and won with the least risk. whitaker used his speed and footwork to out box the best and wanted to fight the best around. chavez a complete warrior but as the two above used his skills to the best of his abilities
My top 3 on the basis of proven ability Whitaker - Proved to be better than Chavez, unbelievably dominant, best defensive fight of all time Jones - literally superman, unbeatable in his prime at his prime weights, great fighters barely lay a glove on him Mayweather - better than Chavez from 130-140 ability wise, will prove to be better than Pacquaio if/when they fight
Pound for pound, so i'll do this as in, say these fighters are all involved in the same era, who would likely be in the top three spots of the pound for pound list. Or i would do it in terms of head to head (or ability, so to speak), but for arguments sake i'll say that in this era they have all had an equal opportunity to prove their ability against good opposition, so both aspects of my list are one in the same. Okay, Whittaker, Mayweather, Sanchez. I really had a hard time picking, for me Manny Pacquiao is truly great, and Hopkins also, but these fighters i picked above have never once been on the end of a schooling in their primes, well Sanchez beat everyone he fought. To be honest it's just too difficult.
Who I rate the highest for H2H ability Whitaker Jones Chavez Griffith would be on the list as to who I rate the highest as ATG's, probably 2nd behind Whitaker. He had a lot of close calls go his way though, and overall I'm a bit more impressed by peak Chavez on film.
