Some accounts are that Arguello was under trememdous pressure as the Mayor of Managua, but ultimately my feeling is that if he indeed took his own life, his battle with cocaine addiction led to it.

I saw a piece on television yesterday in spanish, with Arguello commenting not long ago that he had come close on a few occasions to sticking a knife to his chest over his agony of not being able to rid himself of drugs......that he had prayed to God to take away his desire for drugs.....

I believe that Arguello was hurting inside that he was letting his family and alot of other people down over his drug use.....
Sadly a man in that situation only thinks of the pain he's in now, and thinks little of the lasting pain he will cause his family over his suicide.....
Arguello's family has got to be gutted.

If Arguello's past interviews on the matter of drug use is an indicator.......he took his own life because he could no longer take living with a drug dependency.

Thanks for that link my friend. Its the best read I've read of Alexis after his death.

If ever anyone comes about a nice read like that from someone as educated and knew the man, please post!

"Go with God, my brother"... Funny T, but because of your moniker and your shameless devotion to Roberto Duran :hey, I always assumed you were Latino.

... Yeah T, that's mi padre, en Madison Square Garden con Senor Herbie Kronowitz. Broke his right hand in the second round and went on to take the ten round decision. Also on the bill that night... Kid Gavilan vs. Bernard Docusen, still looking for footage...

    I know you do, T.

Yeah, I know where you're from T. I'm watching The Beatles Anthology these nights, and I especially dig the early stuff that takes place in Liverpool and Hamburg.

    Thanks. A superior tribute.

We must all carry on for Alexis. May his tragedy not be in vain. May it inspire us to finally vanquish every last demon and attain the nobility he embodied.

The man felt there was no further joy in the world, no reason to live, "nothing but nothing". How tragically wrong he was. There is a guy in fellow country Mexico who had always been inspired by his gallantry, sense of fair play and sparkling success.

Now, on my knees, Alexis, I promise you, to the last drop of my blood, never to quit, to carry forth your example of hunger and thirst for justice, of seeking good the right way, with a touch of humility and chivalry and the mark of a champion, in my own little corner of the world.

When you can inspire many who never met you personally, all over the planet, to strive a bit more, the world cannot be hopeless, there will always be a reason to go one more step.

The grain of wheat did not have to die to bear fruit. Alexis chose to, but, now more clearly than ever, he will always be smiling down around my head every time I am able to achieve anything worthy in his footsteps.

    Dios te bendiga, hermano mío.

I wonder if Alexis really knew of the lives he touched and the people he inspired even in countries outside of Nicaragua.
To this day, I've never heard anyone in the boxing world have a bad word to say about him.....just simply admiration for his nobleness, kindness, and work ethic.

I hope that Alexis knew how many people around the world that he inspired, but I fear that in taking his own life he may not have known the extent to wish the many lives he touched.

Thankyou prime for a nice read!
