I would submit that Ricardo outboxed the Olympian and Mosley-conqueror for three rounds before stopping him for, to date, the only time in his 45 fight career.

Is that the jab of a crude slugger? I don't think it's that the guy couldn't box well, he just prefers to wing haymakers.

Mayorga does have good boxing skill its just defensively he's pretty open and he wings his shots. However he has excellent hand speed and shot picking. But then again give him movement or time him with big shots and Mayorga has shown to get into trouble

Mayorgas legacy was done a disservice when he went to 160 and 154 to fight Tito and DLH, he had too much size disadvantage against those 2 (plus they were pretty good)

Both Forrest, Mayorga and Spinks are all underrated Welters imo

    Agreed. :thumbsup

If he had ever hooked up with a defensive-oriented chief second (and one who could actually get through to him, at that), his career could have been remembered as far more. I think he abandoned his good offensive technique a lot of the time because with his style of defense (which is to say, little to none) you have to remain constantly, wildly aggressive to stand a chance. Especially since his chin was somewhat penetrable (not terrible, nor great).

As has already been touched on, Mayorga was an underrated boxer offensively, but had all the defence of a Polynesian island state.

Mayorga was pretty much a crude slugger, but even a broken clock will be right twice a day.

There is a difference between being crude and effective. Mayorga was definately crude but he was also very effective and history is populated by successful, crude fighters who beat seemingly more talented opponents.

I just don't buy that he was a lucky puncher.

He could throw a pretty damn pretty jab. He could throw spine-tingling, knee-pureeing straight punches. He just fought stupid/brave/crazy as or more often.

I have a feeling that THAT version of Mayorga would have a field day with Andre Berto....but wuould be beat this Cotto, Mosley and Clottey.......or Williams of the Quintana 2 fight????

Because I can't imagine him beating many ATG welters, would it be fair to say that because I CAN imagine him beating some of todays Welters, that this isn't a particularly good 147 division? Mosley of today would make good work of him, I think it was clear to see how unmotivated Mosley was in their recent fight.
