Gatti vs Ward 1. Greatest of all time

100% agree:good castillo/corales was great but gatti-ward was on a level rarely seen in any sport

 

It's a matter of personal preference. I got no problem with someone saying they liked Gatti vs Ward better.

 

Gatti-Ward I is and will always be my personal favorite. There are fights with more skill, but none with more grit or heart on display. I watch it once every couple months or so. Will be damn difficult to ever watch again.

 

Gatti/Ward was not the greatest of all time. That is reserved for Hagler and Hearns or Arguello/Pryor or Ali Frazier. Gatti was an exciting fighter and a credit to the game, but to say that fight was the greatest ever is ridiculous. Sorry. I do think Gatti was an incredible fighter. But there is no way I can say his fight with Ward was the greatest. You need great fighters for a fight to be the greatest. It had a lot of action and for that year it was great.

 

You know what's ridiculous? You saying that a subjective choice can be wrong. There is no wrong answer to the question "What is the greatest fight ever?" It is opinion. If someone says Klitschko-Ibragimov is the greatest fight ever, they are right.

Though it was an instant classic ..I could not compare this fight with Morales Barrera 1 but then again the wars that GATTI /Ward had its hard to argue ..

 

I guess that makes you a gay experienced ESB poster. I am being honest. And if someone said Klitschko/Ibragimov is the greatest fight ever they are wrong. Is boxing a joke to you uncle paulie? I take the sport seriously and know what commitment people put into it. so you cannot just say any fight is great or it diminishes fighters and the sport. A great fighter has to have been in great fights.. That is a common belief, so wouldn't that mean great fights have to have great fighters? As for Arturo I love Arturo and saying Ward/Gatti was not the best ever is not an insult on him. I think the big insult is to say his fight was the best fight ever now, and in a year take it back. It was a great fight that year and exciting and he was an exciting fighter with probably the biggest heart we have seen in 20 years. He will be remembered over Floyd and Jones and guys like that because of the spirit he showed. Arturo will be remembered well. Saying his fight is not the greatest not an insult, but that fight cannot be the best ever. And you can say opinions are not wrong, but there are facts which go with greatness in boxing. This is not about Arturo. It is about being honest and objective regarding boxing history. You have to stay objective if you love boxing. Gatti/Ward will live for all time as a great fight between guys with big hearts, but it cannot go in the same category as Hagler and Hearns or Arguello and Pryor or Ali Frazier or Foreman Lyle and that level.

Some people put more emphasis on sustained action, close competition, and shifts in momentum rather than the greatness of the fighters. Others may feel that the greatest fight ever shouldn't rely so much on the need to have seen it live like Hagler-Hearns does.

Gatti-Robinson 1 is slightly better than Gatti-Ward 1 IMO anyway. Maybe no rounds as great as the 9th of Gatti-Ward 1, but Gatti-Robinson 1 had more consistent sustained action throughout.

 

I'm not going to read what you wrote nor am I going to respond to you on this thread again. This isn't an argument thread. If you want to argue about what the best fight ever is, fine, make a thread about it and do it there. This is clearly a place to pay tribute to what is the favorite fight for a lot of people here, from their favorite fighter; myself included on both counts. If you don't want to do that, then STFU and GTFO. That simple.

 

Hagler vs Hearns was a great round (yes I know it ended in the third). For me that fight was awsome but just too short to be my favorite of all time. Again like it's been said, it's subjective. I know plenty og guys that had Gatti vs Ward as their all time favorite well before Gatti's untimely death and it always comes up several times any time a thread is started for all time favorite fights.

They may not have been the greatest fighters but they were solid and evenly matched, well prepared and willing to leave it all in the ring. THose are the ingredients for a great fight.

 

some of the greatest action fights I saw were small time fighters in east coast boxing clubs where no way would the fights get recognition. It is not about action it is about level of fighter. I think that fight with Ward was great, but on the level with those great fighters like Hearns or Hagler or Arguello or Pryor I am not sure it can go there. It is not about seeing those fights live like I did, it is about the whole game and making a man fight his fight. My comments have nothing to do with Gatti and Ward as men. It is about being objective in boxing. That is the ultimate respect for all fighters. and I am honest when I say Gatti probably has the most unbelievable heart of anyone who ever fought in the game of boxing and probably the top left hook. That is a pretty big compliment to say about him, and I mean it since I am objective about boxing. About Arturo, he was a great guy and person.

And I paid tribute to Arturo probably before you did on the tribute threads. The thread is about greatest of all time. This is not a tribute thread but a boxing thread. On the tribute ones and gave credit to Arturo.You say if I want to argue what is the greatest fight ever I should make a thread about it? That is what this thread was about. It was not about a tribute. This was about Gatti and Ward and was it the greatest of all time. You are the one who sounds like a noobie.
