Did he mean if you're weren't wearing the headgear it would be counted as a Knockout?

and of course Wayne McCullough, never down as an amateur or pro and only ever stopped due to being retired in his career. Never notably shaken in a fight.

But your right there are people on here who take chins into the equation far too much. Dave Boy McAuley was on his arse all the time and he was only knocked out once in 9 World title fights(winning 6).

How quickly a fighter recovers can be as important as his chin aswell.

I think your trainer is wrong. A knockdown occurs when a boxer, after being hit by his opponent: 1) touches the ring floor with some part of his body other than the feet; 2) has any part of his body outside the ropes; 3) is hanging on the ropes helplessly; or 4) is judged to be in a semi-conscious state and unable to continue fighting. (http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/Knockdown). A knockout is when this happens and the fighter fails to recover within the ten count.

Flash knockdown, normal, could be from your position or just a punch you didn't see coming that lifted you off your feet.

Knockdown = You are hit and something under than your feet touches the canvas.

Knockout = You don't get up before the final count.

Technical Knockout = The fight is called off, regardless of whether you get up or not.
