More bad news... http://www.rds.ca/boxe/chroniques/278292.html Gatti's wife, 23 years old, apparently strangled his husband in his sleep. According to a spokesperson from the police, Milena Saraiva, Gatti was apparently strangled with a strap from a hand bag in addition to receiving a violent shot to the head. Take it for what its worth since RDS itself is quoting other Montreal media, but this is horrifying to learn if true...
Jesus...of all celebrities I wouldn't have guessed in a million years that Gatti would be the next to pass. His first fight with Ward back in '02 was what first made me a boxing fan. This sucks. R.I.P. Arturo
A few odd tidbits I'll always remember: 1. This unknown kid coming out of nowhere to destroy then-hyped Pete Taliafero on TNF. 2.-Doctor: "COVER THE EYE" Gatti: *crickets* Doctor: "COVER THE EYE OR IT'S OVER" Gatti: "Two Fingers" 3.-"Oh my gosh...OH MY GOODNESS...WHAT A FIGHT" 4. Nearly decapitating poor Joey Gamache. Looked like that Bud Light commercial. 5. During the postfight interview of the first Ward fight: "Micky actually has pretty good defense...for a guy who doesn't move his head he's hard to hit." Thus automatically eliminating his shot at ever doing boxing analysis.
I've never been more upset or shocked as a boxing fan when I heard about the passing of Arturo Gatti. I still can't believe it. He wasn't the biggest, fastest, or strongest fighter but his heart made him great. I remember his fights with wilson ridriguez, gabe rueulas, and his amazing trilogy with Mickey Ward. I'll will miss Arturo Gatti everytime I watch a fight. He gave us all great fights, he battled when he was bleeding, and he never quit, he had the greatest heart (which Ifeel is the greatest atribute a fighter can have ) I still can't believe it. I've been a Gatti fan for several years. He blead while announcing his retirement after his loss to Alfonso Gomes on July 14,2007. When I found out about his death last night at the age of 37, the remembered his great battles, such as the 3rd war with Mickey Ward when he broke his hand and fought the last 6 rounds with a broken right hand and won the fight, I realised if he never saw the age of 38, 39, 40, etc, what hope do the rest of us have.
The rest of us will have hope as long as we don't marry a crazywoman. Sad, but true. The reality is that Gatti would be alive today if not for the actions of a madwoman.
Too quick and easy bro. i hope she rots for life in a Brazilian prison/hellhole and raped multiple times by the corrupt brazilian guards with no possibility of extradition to North America.
It's a shame, after all those wars his wife murders him? So very sad. Gatti earned his money, it was his, not hers.
To be fair if we're picking the lesser of two evils, I think we all know which one we'd prefer. It's too early to judge anything on either side. Gatti could've hit her, she could've just been after his money...etc etc etc. All I know is the victim is the kid in all this. Imagine having one of the biggest warriors as a father and never getting to know him.
The scary thing is everytime I think of it...you just can't help but wonder what's worse. Reading about Gatti's murder is awful...but there was a worse alternative. After all, I had no interest in seeing Gatti in his late 50s/early 60s in Bobby Chacon's state, stumbling over words. Shaking and twitching because his body has been beaten to the point beyond repair. A complete shell of a warrior forced to live in boxing gym's because drugs, alcohol and punches have ruined his mental state and his money is all gone. Seeing one of our greatest warriors in a completely deteriorated state would probably just be worse...and stretched over a longer and more substantially painful period of time.
